Just because they authenticate it doesn't mean it's real....

On another board, there was some controversy with Global Authenticaion Inc (GAI), who, as you may already know, is a very large authentication company, about as big as PSA/DNA. Well in the current Premier Auctions, there was a Mickey Mantle signed Cooperstown Collection throwback jersey. It was GAI AUTHENTICATED. The only problem is, is that the tag which was on the jersey (shown below) was placed onto Cooperstown Collection jersey's starting in 2001. Mantle died in 1995. How could an authentication company pass a fake? It's simply unbelievable. I'd post a link but the auction has already been removed. It's just ridiculous knowing that fakes can get by authentication companies like this.

Here is the tag which was on the jersey, which started to be put onto Cooperstown Collection jerseys starting in 2001:

Yes, mistakes are made. And will continue to be made. That's why they have "buy back" policies I guess.

Very interesting and thanx for sharing. One thing is fer sure - it's hard to sign from the hereafter. image

BTW, nice Eli Marrero game used 2006 Rockies helmet you picked up!

There have been a number of threads here about GAI products. Suffice to say that I will never, and I do mean never buy a GAI product.

Possibly a signed jersey number they had sewn onto a M&N jersey thinking it would be worth more.

The autograph was on the jersey
  • Mantle always commented about how much stuff Roger Maris signed from the grave...maybe he's taking a page from his old teammate.
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

I don't think it would had gotten past PSA.

    Just my two cents.image

  • Everyone makes mistakes. My first post on here was about a PSA DNA item that was in a Mastros catalog where the name was spelled wrong. That item was removed also...

Yea, and I've got locks of hair from George Washington that I authenticated myself. Don't worry - they're genuine, it's just a coincidence that me and the first president had the exact same hair color.

I was wondering about that lot, but wasn't sure when those types of jerseys were produced. Here is the original description:

I was very surprised to see that they had switched from PSA/DNA to GAI for this particular auction, and was already planning on not bidding on some of the items I normally would because they were not PSA/DNA certified. Guess I'll be staying away from even more now.
    Who is Rober Maris?
  • Again, it goes like this:

    1. PSA
    2.
    3
    4
    5 SGC
    6
    7
    8
    9.GAI
    10. SCD
    11.
    12.BGS
    13.PRO
    14. GEM

stay away from anything below 5!
