New Larry Fritsch Catalog

What a bunch of useless overpriced junk-just my opinion-how does that guy make a business out of selling reprints and other crazy issues? He does have 65 million cards -thats insane!I love the "real" vintage stuff! Just my opinion.

  • Near Mint/Mint means wax stains on 20% of the cards. I can only imagine what Ex/mt means...

Most of us in the hobby (at least the ones of us who were in the hobby in previous decades) bought from him.

    ....once.

Collecting my sports heroes, Roger Staubach and Kirby Puckett.

Before 1990, you could buy sets from him and get some decent cards in them. Today, I highly doubt it as I believe he must have some employee pull the keys and make up o/c sets. I once bought a 1970 Football set from him. The entire second series was filled with badly tilted cards. The first series was nice however.

Like opening packs, it's a gamble......

He really tries to push those reprint sets too. Maybe he's trying to gain new vintage card customers that will like them so much they will start collecting the legit older issues as a result. Just a thought.

Larry and son can keep all 65 million cards as far as I'm concerned.

Have you seen some of his prices in those ads he runs in SCD? He must think his unopened boxes have gold coins in them, in addition to cards. No thanks.

Jerry, you're assuming he needs to sell. I don't think he does and is just fishing. He certainly doesn't look like he's starving.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

I think that you are absolutely right - I'll never forget when he announced that he was going to sell some of his vast unopened inventory a while back, and asked for email inquiries about specific items. I sent him 2 emails, he never bothered to reply to either one. That's not exactly the sign of an eager seller.

    his website is really weak....

where is all the unopened vintage cardboard at, i didn't see anything there?

the current catalog is viewable online, but it is .pdf's and they are only viewable 1 page at a time!!!! that would be 87 separate pages to view in order to see online catalogs?!

his website has prolly not changed since '96 when it was created.

    must b nice

I think Larry is what we politely refer to as OLD SCHOOL.

Fritsch sells fantasy sets (cards that never were) in addition to reprints, and in the early 80s, he was the licensed manufacturer for some minor league sets (Midwest League teams).

The sets he reprinted are only those where reprinting was legitimate - the manufacturer is out of business and the copyright expired (back during the first half of the century, copyright was 28 years, although you could renew it at the end for 28 more). [There's a separate issue nowadays with player estates preserving their rights in the name and likeness, but that's not at issue for these.] I've seen quite a number of his reprints, and they all are readily distinguishable from the originals (card stock, reprint statement, picture technique, often card size).

I don't have a problem with fantasy issues (really not much difference between those and some of the stuff Topps and Upper Deck have been putting out with retired players lately), and the reprints were never a problem in the pre-ebay days - you could tell them apart on sight, and they were fun for some younger collectors as well as autograph collectors.

A hobby pioneer....sadly the world has quickly passed him by.

He would do well if everyone still thought of cards and such in 1985 terms.

  • I would guess he still makes lots of sales. There was a positive thread recently on the net54 forums. I am sure he has many longtime regulars who also still collect like they were in the 80's and are not as concerned about condition as they are about completing their sets.
