Home Buy, Sell, & Trade - U.S. Coins

I am seeking the forum's opinion on selling some things.

I have been trying to slowly get my collection down to the core items. I still have a ways to go, but, before I move forward, I would like to solicit opinions as to when/where forum members have had their best success for particular items. The following items are some of what is to eventually go:

1. Proof and Mint sets - modern from 1998 forward, a few other older ones sprinkled in (nothing super rare or old)
2. A low grade Barber Quarter set without the 96-O, 01-S or 13-S.
3. A few certified Barber Halves.
4. A few certified Seated Quarters.
5. Some raw coins that are better dates, but not better than VG.
6. Barber dimes, Standing Quarters and other random silver coins, mostly melt type of stuff.
7. Low grade certified coins.

Any thoughts or insight are greatly appreciated.

Comments

  • IMHO, if you want to maximize dollar value, try posting each item on ebay. For the proof sets, set up distinct auctions for each set rather than lumping together b/c the market is broader for those looking to purchase an individual set rather than a group of sets. Tips for selling on eaby: brief description, nice photo, competitive shipping rate, and a return policy.
  • Just wondering how much not having a return policy affects sales. Also how not having Paypal affects sales. Comments?
Ebay is how I sell most of my stuff.

why pay ebay when you can list them here first for free.

I think you should come up with set price and list them here first (for free!)............saves on ebay fees/packaging materials/trips to the PO, etc.

If you don't have anything super valuable, the 10% or so you don't make on it here, you will spend on the previously mentioned stuff...........wes

and, will get a chance to disburse some of your stuff to other forum members who might need some of it to fill sets, etc.........

Yea, Post it here. Lots of lurkers just waiting to pounce on something. Especially ME!image Seriousely, post a list, asking price, and pics would certainly help (of the coins) and I bet you get some offers. Might sell enough you decide not to part with some of it.

List everything here and avoid the fees. If the proof and mint sets dont sell there are several dealers will most likely give you 10%-15% back of greysheet. This is about what paypal/ebay fees would run you so selling to them awould save you time and hassle.

I find that people are more comfortable buying from you if they know you have a return policy. They feel like you'll make it good if there's a problem, instead of giving them the, "you bought it, your problem!" type of response.

I also find that the majority of my eBay/internet buyers are now using Paypal to make things easier and expedite the turn-around time.....no waiting for snail-mail to send payments and no waiting for the checks to clear which might add as much as 10 dyas to the wait time.

I think the "instantaneous gratification" people (like my wife) now tend to pass right by the sellers who won't accept Paypal.

  • I would agree with everybody else, list here first. But, PM me the list 3-4 days before you put them up on here so I can see what I want first.

I believe I've missed out on every one I've seen in my short time on here that I would have been interested in.

I agree with the people saying list here.

Here is what I would do:

Get a greysheet. Use for help in pricing.
    Take pictures.
Be honest and accurate in grading/problems and price appropriately.
Post here and show the pics and the pieces with your comments on them.

On generic proof/mint sets, etc, ebay will generally get you the greysheet area but then you pay fees and are dealing with a lot of unknowns.
    Here, no fees.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
