What about a basketball group wax rip?Are there enough Basketball collectors interested?

Hey guys Im still kinda new I've seen hockey a couple football and a few baseball wax rips. are there any basketball collectors in here?
I have more basketball then anything and would love to open some vintage wax i'd be the first to signup for 2 or 3 lots

Would there be enough interest in a basketball rip say like 77-82 topps and 87-88 fleer or something to that effect.
Chime in if your a basketball collector.

Hey 80's junkie if you read this could you do some price research on a basketball rip?

Why was there a huge gap in Topps BK sets? I mean, they had an unbroken run of baseball starting in 1951 and football starting in 1956, so why the big gap in basketball? Was Topps not able to get the proper licenses or was NBA basketball really that unpopular at that time?

    Prices from Baseball Card Exchange:

    78/79 Topps $325
    79/80 Topps $250
    80/81 Topps $1450
    81/82 Topps $235
    87/88 Fleer $1050
    88/89 Fleer $500

    Total $3810

Divided 36 ways that is $105.83 before shipping is included. The price per pack would be $17.64.

A little too steep for me just now, but maybe some might be willing to try.

  • I would be in for that price. Let me know.

  • Well beantown if you get enough people interested let me know and i'll work with you on putting a rip together. I'm a little worn from the last two rips but if you can drum up enough interest I'll help make it happen and put it all together.

I would suggest a voteing thread with a couple of options first. that seemed to work great for the last 2 rips

but heres a good example of what might be a good option.

There were 3 different boxes in 81/82 a west midwest and east. the west had magic and the lakers and the east had bird celtics knicks not sure if there was any stars in the midwest teams. so there was actually 3 different packs for 81/82

    78/79 topps 325 box
    79/80 topps 250 box
    80/81 topps 1450
    81/82 east box 235
    81/82 midwest box 220
    81/82 west box 220
    87/88 fleer 1050
    88/89 fleer 500
8 boxes 4250 divide by 36 = 118 per person. the discount steve gives usually covers the shipping and paypal so i would say 118 sounds right.

another option leave out the 88/89 fleer would be 104

or just do the topps packs would be 75 a piece

    just some thought.

But beantown im still a little busy with the football rip so like i said you drum up the support and let me know I'll make it happen if you find enough people interested.

If we kept it around 100 id do 2 or 3 lots myself. I always wanted a shot at the magic bird rookie
  • If you do a basketball rip...count me in!!!

I'm sure a lot of it had to do with popularity. Even when '86 Fleer came out there was really no interest until around 1989/90.

I'd like to do a basketball rip....but, my suggestion would be to leave out the '80 and pick up more of the '70s stuff for that same 1450. Those Magic/Bird/Dr J cards have so many issues that even if we pull one from the box it would probably only grade an 8 or something. I've pulled one before and it was a 8PD with those darn printing dots that are on so many of those cards.

Maybe a mid to late 70s rip with a box or two of the Fleer stuff ('87 & '88).

Count me in. I liked the hockey rip and would be keen on any basketball rip involving 70's and 80's packs.
  • thats a good idea arny id really like to pull a magic rookie but extra shots at some high grade jordans sounds nice to. just curious any one know how many different panels were in the 80 topps set. Arny do you know how many magic/bird/j rookies average in a box 1 or 2?
  • Not sure if I will take part, but I've opened everything you've mentioned and here's what I'd do:

    - Skip the 80/81- the Magic-Bird-Erving is the only card that will pay for the pack, and there is at best two in the box. The lesser Bird and Magic RCs don't bring much unless they are 9 or better, and this product is hard to get 9's and 10's, even from a clean box. At $40 a pack, it's not worth it.

    - The 78, 79, and 81 are all really fun to open and not that expensive. Just pick the east box because that's the one with the McHale rookie. All regions have the regular cards of Magic and Bird. I think the Midwest has the Laimbeer RC and the West has Magic's In Action card, which are both not really worth going for.

    - Do the 87-88 and 88-89 Fleer packs because the sets are small and they're loaded with stars, and PSA 10's of commons can bring decent money.

For 78, 79, 81, 87 and 88, you're looking at $65/person. I would say at least a third us will get our money's worth (in terms of market value) or better. How many of the past vintage rips could say that? With the 80/81 included, almost none of us will.

  • Hey thanks for that info CDs I always wondered what the difference in the 3 82 boxes were. So east would be the way to got on 82
plus that dont sound too bad 6 packs around 70 bucks shipped. I could go for about 4 lots of that. what about the fleer boxes with the small sets there should be what about 3 of each card atleast in the box?
  • i would def be interested in a lot when/if you work it out...thanks!

I'm in if the years/packs are going to be solid. I would love a crack at the Bird/Magic Rook. Could we go earlier than 77 and still be affordable?
Looking for a Glen Rice Inkredible and Alex Rodriguez cards
  • Halo 78 is as far back as bbce or dacw seems to have plus 77 and earlier the price really starts going up. Im for the 81 pack either way 40 is alot for that pack but then again i'm a gamblin man
  • The Fleer packs avg about 3.5 sets per box, so you can expect at least 3 Jordan's out of each box, plus 3 Jordan stickers. If you wanted a high dollar alternative, 1975 Topps would be about $40/pack from the GAI graded box. PSA 10 commons generally go for $50-$100 depending on the pop., but PSA 9 commons often don't get your grading fees back and stars bring about 50-60% of SMR. With only one big RC (Moses Malone) and a few big superstar cards (Dr. J, Maravich and Kareem), I'm not sure that's worth it unless a lot of 10's come out of the box. But if you're going to throw in a high dollar pack for the hell of it, I think the payoff is better in the '75 box than the '80.

To put the '80 box into perspective, you could buy seven PSA 8 Bird/Magic/Dr. J RC's for the same price as the box, and the rest of the set for not much more. Plus, PSA 10's of stars and semis only bring around $35 each, and you'll be lucky to get 3 out of a box.

Whatever we decide, I'm in for at least 1 lot (Unless the 80-81 is involved).

  • Basketball cards were my first love growing up so I'm in on this one. The '75 set is still my favorite one of all time so ripping a pack would be pretty cool.
  • If you keep it at $125.00 or less count me in for 3.

I am in for 2 at $125 per or less

  • Bean sounds like we could do this if we let guys have multiple lots. I sent you a pm why dont you sart a voting thread I'll go ahead and call steve and gets some prices and check his inventory on the boxes. I should be done with the football rip this weekend and be able to get more involved with this . Your doing a great job so far beantownboy

Oh yeah whatever we decide I want in for 2
  • boy the boards are busy 2 nite
  • I'd probably be up for a lot.

    Peace

Trying to complete 1970 psa set.
    45% complete.
  • What are the "official specs" on this rip? Seems a lot of stuff has been suggested but it's going to be tough to get confirmed "I'm in's" without knowing what and how much?

I am tempted though. Thanks to everyone who's doing all the work.

  • just worked out a few diff options with 80sjunkie and started a voting thread. It is tough with such a gap in years but they are feasable and I think would be fun . We cant goback farther then 78 no one has boxes and they get way to expensive. the 86 fleer is obviously out at 10 k a box so i hope the options we came up with will drum up enough support. Plus the way it seems alot of us want more then one lot some have said 3 or 4 so I dont think we will need 36 people to do it. im thinking 20 or lessimage

anyways go to the vote thread make it count and leave your opinions on that thread also
  • imagegreat job beanie

On the national level, the NBA was practically on life support. In the late 1970s before Bird/Johnson the NBA finals were shown on tape delay. So there really wasn't much of a demand to produce cards.

Anyway I might be interested. I always liked the look of basketball cards.
  • The game itself was a distant third to Baseball and Football back in the 60's and 70's which was bad enough but the licensing issues were also a very large part of the problem. If you look at The Topps Sets particulary 1969-70,1970-71 and 1971-72 you see a lot of the uniforms which display the team names doctored so that the players name is on front of the jersey or there is no name. I think Topps also regrets the way they handled the Basketball market especially in the 60's when major stars in their prime Oscar Robertson,Bill Russell,Chamberlain and others were never showcased with a set. Than they produced sets in the 70's up to 1981 and dropped the ball again with the Bird/Celtics-Magic/Lakers rivalry just getting into gear. Actually Star and Fleer regenerated the Market with The Jordan era and it seems pretty healthy today. Oh well cant undo the past.
