If you had the cash could you build one of the 97 or 98 Masterpiece Sets?

Like the 97 and 98 Ultra and Flair 1/1 Masterpiece sets. Not all the rows but just row 1 or 2 or whatever you wanted. Say you won the lottery, could you pry the cards from player collectors and get them to come out of the woodwork? Think there are still some in wax? Is it possible?

Dude if I won the lottery the LAST thing on my mind would be cards. I probably wouldn't come out of my drug induced haze for a solid decade.
Mark Mulder rookies
Chipper Jones rookies
Orlando Cabrera rookies
Lawrence Taylor
Sam Huff
Lavar Arrington
NY Giants
NY Yankees
NJ Nets
NJ Devils
1950s-1960s Topps NY Giants Team cards
Looking for Topps rookies as well.

Every year or two -- it seems like there is "new money" that enters the hobby with reckless abandon. And you would be amazed at some of the rare, high profile cards that come out of the woodwork with huge price tags to satisfy that collecting demand. It never lasts -- but it has happened quite a few times over the past decade or so.

p.s. not that this is a direct comparable -- but Dmitri Young has basically been able to secure any post-war rookie card in PSA 10 he has wanted with the prices he has paid...

I saw a kid once at a card shop throw away the common cards from his packs of Fleer Platinum and not realize he had thrown away a Platinum Finish #/100. Somebody else retrieved the cards and kept them, but if no one had picked them out, that card would have been #/99 for all intents and purposes. I could see that happening with a 1/1 from sets where it wasn't that distinctive.

<< <i>I'm sure there are a significant number of these lost to the hobby forever - destroyed by natural disasters, fire or poor handling (anything from the dog getting them to a basement flood); accidentally disposed of; lost in the U.S. (or another country's) mail; or ruined by protection efforts (e.g., permanently stuck to a holder).

Indeed, it's hard enough say, finding complete sets of Donruss Elite, and they made 10,000 of each of those cards! I'd love to do those if they ever become more affordable.
As for your quest for building complete masterpiece sets; forget about it. Not possible. You'd be lucky if you could make platinum sets.
