Back to the future??

check out this ebay auciton - item# 170077459434.

Apparently, back in 1887 they could see into the future! Jack Dempsey was born in 1895, and yet they could put his picture on an 1887 card?!?! What's wrong with this card???

It always amazes me how these kind of items still get bids...

Actually there were two Jack Dempseys that were boxers, one not so famous from the 1800s and the famous one from the 1920s. I was confused on that issue for the longest time myself.image

I see that all the time on the N162 Dempsey. I usually e-mail the seller, but I've yet to see a description changed. The N162 Dempsey sells for a premium over other boxers in the set, which is not explainable by the earlier Dempsey's career.

  • Actually, the earlier Dempsey -- or "Nonpareil" Dempsey -- is also in the IBHOF. He was a light- and middleweight champion and considered one of the best of his eras. The latter -- and more contemporarily popular -- Dempsey was a heavyweight champion. Neither of the fighters' real names was Jack.

If authentic, whoever won that auction got it for a very good price. Sure, it won't get higher than a 1 because of that major crease across the middle but the favt that it resides just at the figures cutoff point helps to hide it and it has nice eye appeal. Another 1 in lesser shape sold for $200 a month ago.
