I've finally finished my Canadian silver dollar set

for now.

After 7 or more years of collecting Canadian silver dollars (and some nickel dollars), I finally bought a 1948. I still don't have any of the Arnpriors or the regular 1957, but I don't collect by die variety anyway. So, even though my Dansco album still has 4 blank spots, I'm finished with the set.

I guess I could go back and upgrade some of the coins. For example, my 1945 has a rim bump and the 1947 ML is a cleaned one I bought from a noted collector up in the Buffalo area. image (Yes, he and ANACS noted it was cleaned). And I guess I could fill in some blank spaces on the last page with proof or specimen silver dollars up to 1990.

I'm still "finished," though. image

Cool. Finishing a set is always a terrific feeling.

That's funny-- spinaker said the exact same thing! image

I'd like to collect unc nickel dollars and loonies, but they've been hard to find in business strikes. "Unc" nickel dollars are usually beat up circulation examples or prooflikes. Loonies look ugly once they're circulated a while, so I really can't get into the idea of filling a new Dansco album full of dull brown, beat up coins (I'm not an EAC member).

I think I'll go back to gandering at Waitangi crowns and the other expensive coins I need to finish my George V commonwealth silver coin set. There are a few East Africa coins I need for the set, also, and I've yet to come across an example I'd like to own. The coins I need are too expensive, too hard to find, or both. At least it will keep me busy.

Congrats, always nice to finish a set, I usually give up before the end. Did you follow kat's advice on the other thread for the 48?

Coinkat advised: "pay the 1000 and be happy."

I should have, but I tried to get him to throw in an inexpensive one. He stood firm and claimed to have another customer willing to buy it at $1,200. Had I bought it on the spot, he probably would have done so (I didn't have my check book or the OK from my wife at the time, though).

    Congratulations Shirohniichan !!!!
  • Congrats. I recently finished a 1937-1967 Canadian 50 cent collection. I have 3 of the 4 varieties of 1947 and that's enough. Now I think I am going to work on a few 1911-1936 50 cents and see if I can do Canadian dimes 1911 to date.

If you're trying to put together a set of 50 cent pieces in VF and up, you'd better have deep pockets. image

I finally snapped shots of the 1948 dollar. One of these days I'll come up with a better method of taking photos than laying my albums on a window sill and using natural light.

Nothing wrong with that picture! Looks pretty good.

Congrats on completing the set. I can only imagine what the other coins look like.

Hey, if its quick and easy continue- very nice pics! By the way, congratulations Shiro. One of these days you'll have to do the full album shoot of the collection. There's something about the phrase "ShiroCan dollars" that I like.image

The problem with shooting Canadian dollars from 1945 on is that most have mirrored surfaces. You can see the lens mirrored in the obverse photo, and you can see a reflection of my finger on the reverse right side.

Once I get multiple lamps and learn how to tilt the coins just so I'l be able to have photos completely in focus that don't show reflections.

If you'd like - I could give you a hand with thos 5 cent pieces, while I'm in Toronto. I'm in touch with a number of dealers here, especially if there's something specific you are looking for.
