Card show finds....

Was at a show yesterday and picked up a few hi grade vintage for $90 total. Just thought I'd share. How do you think they'd grade?

I think the Unitas has centering issues that keep it from being an out and out 8. If I had to guess, I'd say 8 OC or straight 7, but wouldn't be surprised to see 9 OC. The '66 checklist is definitely a possible 9. The Karras RC could pull an 8, but most likely a 7, and the Starr should be a 7 as well, but I give it a 20% shot at an 8. The Love was $2 so I figured what the hell, but when I checked what PSA 8s and 9s were going for on ebay, it's definitely not worth grading (If anybody wants it for $2, it's yours). I was really surprised to find that hi grade 70s OPC hockey sells for almost nothing considering how tough centering and edges are. I wasn't sure how much PSA would hurt me with the edges, but I figured it's at least a slam dunk 8 and the price was right.

Both the Unitas (lower left) and Starr (lower right) have corners that look consistent with a trim job, so I'd probably measure them up and check the cut before I submitted them. But even then I might not send them in. NM-MT raw cards lately have been selling for more-or-less what a PSA 8 would sell for, so if they don't look like they'd be any better than 7's I would sell them raw, since you'll very likely get more money for them that way than you would in PSA 7 holders.

Anyway, something to think about. The Hull looks sweet. PSA is all over the map on '70's OPC hockey, so don't be surprised if that card comes back anywhere between a 9 and a 6. But you're right about raw OPC cards from that era. You can still buy them for next to nothing (when you can find them), but there is small yet dedicated clique of collectors who understand how hard these cards are and will pay very good money for those cards in PSA 8 or better.

The trimming occurred to me as I was looking at the cards, but they both are legit in terms of size and I'm usually good at spotting trim jobs. I might sell the Unitas raw for fear of an 8 OC, but the rest will probably go to PSA. A PSA 7 Starr hasn't popped up on ebay in a while and a nice PSA 8 sold for $250, so maybe there is some built up demand for that card. Thanks for the advice Boo- you probably saved me a few bucks on grading the Unitas.

FWIW I think that Unitas could end up in a PSA 8 NQ holder with no problems. I've had many, many PSA 8's with centering that was even a shade worse than that. If the corners are strong then I think a PSA 8 NQ would actually be the most likely grade.

The one I'd be excited by, though, is the Hull. The more I look at that card the sweeter it gets!

Dammit Boo, you're setting me up for disappointment. Screw it- I'm sending them all in and seeing what they grade. Maybe I'll get a nice grader.
