Show report - Wife's first coin show as a buyer (unattended)

Since I got to go to FUN in Florida in January, my wife decided to go visit her parents in February. A few days ago, they noticed there was going to be a coin show in nearby Sebring, Florida today, so they decided to go. Naturally, I was concerned. When my wife is unable to shop for some reason like illness, the nation's leading economic indicators show a decline. image And I was worried she would buy an overgraded coin or one with unacceptable surfaces. But I decided to give her a list of my favorite 19th century silver coins, stay very close to the phone, and hope for the best.

They arrived at the show at its 9 am opening this morning. It was a small show with about 15 dealers. There was a fairly decent sized crowd with active buyers. Most of the dealers featured 20th century coins, but there was a lot of paper money, and some gold. One dealer had a group of twenty (!) 1877 Indian cents, and another had a large group of large cents pedigreed to the Jules Reiver sale. My wife shops differently than I do, I look, and she asks. (I think it is a corollary to the rule about men never asking for directions.image). Some dealers noted that several coins on the list were expensive, and she replied that they are difficult to find, and therefore are expensive. They understood and respected that. She examined several 19th century silver coins and commented on the nice toning, especially on a proof 1870 3c silver with gorgeous blue obverse toning. I asked her to pass on that one. She examined several more coins and called me about an 1866-S half dime in Good, which she said was a bit better on the reverse. After the customary negotiation with the dealer, she bought it for $20. She didn't find anything else of interest, so she called it a day. Good job, honey! image
