Eliasberg Gold 5 Thalers 1745

German States - Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel
1745 (M) 5 Thalers. Fr-714, Welter-2694. AU-55 NGC.
6.61 Grams, 23.60 mm. Draped and armored bust of Karl I to right, legends around / rearing stallion to left, legends, date, and denomination around. Lustrous light gold with a hint of coppery toning inside the rims. Some light hairlines, typical of the grade.
Purchased from B. Max Mehl, January, 1943, apprearently privately.
I purchased the coin from Spinks for a friend who said that I could keep it. I actually passed on the coin when making previous enquiries at Spinks due to the fact that the coin is not slabbed and there is no provenance with it. The coin was sold to me by Jeremy Cheek who was one of the conductors of the Eliasberg auction, April 18-19, 2005.

Hopefully you purchased it at a price without the Eliasberg pedigree premium

<< <i>Weird... I would have expected a "5 thaler" piece to be much larger than 23mm in size. I guess because with silver thalers a 5-thaler would be about the size of a hubcap...
Hmmm, depending on the thalers' silver content. Later on, a gold coin of that size and weight (6.61 Grams, 23.60 mm.) and of 0.900 fineness (not sure about this one) would be the equivalent of ~4 silver crowns (20 frs, lire, drs etc).
Gorgeous coin Marcel, did you get a proof of its pedigree afterall?

Not yet Dimitri. I am waiting to collect a few more raw gold coins in order to spread out the shipping costs over the coins. This might be a problem as I usually buy only slabbed gold. Never the less I am sure that I will collect the required amount of coins over time.
I will put a little note ( re Spinks / Jeremy Cheek ) on my submission form just in case the grading company wants to verify the exact details.
