55 topps set buying suggestions

I have a shot at a 55 topps set....need to see it...person claims the cards are in "good shape"....

Assuming most are nice and most are PSA 5s with a few gifts thrown in, what is a good price to pay for this set so I won't get hurt?

If he said "good shape", I wouldn't expect much. Without knowing anything, I would suggest throwing out $1 - $1.5k and see his reaction.. Maybe $3k if they have a LEGIT chance at 5's.

Here are some examples for you:

    Edited to add:

The KEY card is Clemente. If it's got an easy chance of a 5 throw another $500.

You may also want to search some recently completed auctions from the major auction houses (Mastro, Lelands, Mile High, etc). They typically have a 1955 set or two, often with many or all of the cards graded by PSA.

Raw sets that may grade out in the 4 to 5 range usually sell for around 2k on ebay. centering is all over the place so be careful.

If the set is like I mentioned above offer 1.5k for it.

If you feel it wouls grade in the 5 to 6 range offer a lil more.

  • mayo, are you buying with the intent to flip, or is this going to be part of your collection? And if you decide to flip, are you going to break it up or keep the set intact? If I were flipping, I would grade out the big cards and anything that had a shot at a 7 or better, sell anything that got a 7 or better and replace them with cards in similar condition as the rest of the set. You can really increase your profits by individually selling the gems of the set. Either way, good luck. How did you find this guy?

stown, What's the deal with that Aaron? Surface wrinkle? Looks like a solid 8 or better with nice centering and sharp corners.

Those are sweet, Rip! You don't see centering like that on 55s very often.

3 lightly touched corners (instead of 1) kept this card out of a 7 holder.

    Good for you.
  • If I get it, I will grade the top tier condition cards, sell them off and then back fill with lower grade cards and sell the set as a whole.

There is one tiny corner ding on the bottom right that is only noticeable on a large scan and barely visable to the naked eye even knowing about it.

  • Made a deal to pick up the set with a gem T206 thrown in for 2K cash.....

without seeing the cards, i wouldnt expect them to be much better than 3s. maybe you are in for a nice surprise though.
  • I saw the set and a dealer offered $1800 for it....So I stepped up with $200 more...

It is a borderline set with I believe a few 5s...there are a few common gems and the T206 common that might come back a 7 or 8 makes the deal....

I believe based on overall raw condition it would go for a min of $2500 on feebay....

A true 'gem' T206 I think goes for 2k on its own. PSA 8 have been going for that. be careful it may have been trimmed down.

If it's borderline with maybe a few 5s, it may get $2,500 with a reputable and solid Seller on eBay.

If there's some high grade commons and key cards are at least 5s, I would break it up and sell in lots/individually. Then you would get a minimum of $2,500 IMO.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do image
