First crossover attempt

I thought I would test the waters and try to cross a few cards over. I left them in the holder and used the min grade as the grade of the current holder -- in the case of 1/2 grades used by other companies I went with the lower whole number.

I wish there was more consistency between the companies but am THRILLED with the Joe Louis.

The one's that didn't make it were:

The Stanly Matthews was a GAI 7 -- this was diappointing as there are not many PSA graded cards from this set and it is the last one I need to complete my set so I took a flyer.

The Kobe was an SGC 96.

The other Kobe was a BGS 9.5 and the Brady was an SGC 96.

So only 60% crossed but the biggie made it through!

  • That's nice. I would feel comfortable with the SGC but I'd feel a lot better having it in a PSA slab. Nice card halosfan. I've come close to pulling the trigger on that Ardath many times but haven't done it yet. You may have just convinced me. image

    Congrats.

I am very surprised the BGS 9.5 crossed to a PSA 10. Good for you! Nothing against BGS but it would be easy to reject a GEM MINT card for any reason.

I am not surprised the GAI 7 did not cross for a multitude of reasons.

I'd recommend picking one up. I'm now looking for the 2 1935 JA PATTREIOUEX cards.

There were a few nice Dempseys on the Bay recently that I passed up for a shot at a Schmelling -- but I got smoked on that one. Should have bought the Dempseys

  • Matthew,

You and me both. I had snipes set for a few of the Dempseys and they never even got in because they weren't high enough. Not a good sign from someone who's working on the Dempsey registry set. I've got three of the Pattreioux Sporting Events & Stars (two raw, one PSA 5) but I've never seen a copy of the Sporting Celebrities, nevermind seen an auction for one. Good luck in finding one. I don't think any of the Louis Master set registrants have one and there are some heavy hitters in there. I got lucky with my PSA 5. I caught a BIN auction 40 minutes after it got listed for $28. I couldn't hit the Buy It Now button fast enough. There's one on auction right now and it's at $77 with over two days left.

I remember you holding back on a Dempsey auction because you saw my name. As much as I appreciate that Matt, and I do, I would have no problem losing an auction to you. At least I know it would be heading to a good home. Maybe we could coordinate our efforts in the future so that we're not bidding against each other. Nothing set in stone (obviously if one person is willing to pay more than the other than all's fair) but maybe we could avoid bidding each other up or something.

I'm really glad to see someone else on here hopping on the boxing wave. There are some extraordinarily knowledgeable collectors of boxing cards on here with collections that would put both of ours to shame.

    What Schmeling were you eyeing?

    You got it.

With the vintage boxing cards there are definitely some heavy hitters out there. I keep running into 3 and I think it is moving into the 5-6 area now. although it's harder to tell now that it's bidder 1 bidder 2.

I was hoping to pick up a PSA 7 Schmelling for the Adventure set. It is the last boxer I need and one of 4 cards over all to complete the set.

This weekend I'm going to order a copy of the new Boxing Card Encyclopedia put out by Adam S. Warshaw. I'm sure that once it arrives I'll be getting involved in a number of new issues image If you don't have the info to order one let me know and I'll pass it along.

  • Funny. I was just saying to Griffins the other day that I need to order that. I have his website bookmarked and refer to it virtually on a daily basis. I think I'm almost scared to get it as once I learn about all the other sets out there my bidding/winning will increase.

I know what you mean about the heavy hitters. There's one in particular that just continuously seems to out bid me on the snipes. The thing that kills me is when my snipe ends up being about twice what the next highest bidder bids and this guy always gets me one more. But hey, if he's willing to pay it then who am I to complain?

As far as the Schmeling goes, that would be a great pickup. My only concern with the Adventure cards is that there seems to be no end to the amount of available cards. While the Black Uhlan card is very rare I'm sure there are more out there that will be slabbed and available as time goes by. I've noticed times of runs where a handful of Ringside Bob Murphy's or Adventure Schmelings appear. While I hope to one day own one my main concern from that set is a Mint 9 Dempsey. There are 16 out there and I'm sure more to arrive so I'm concentrating on the more oddball issues right now. The thing I don't get is that the Adventure cards were the only issue to go up in the latest SMR when I've seen dramatic increases in other issues that far outweight the Adventure cards.

Good luck on the Schmeling. For now, you won't have to worry about competing with me for one.
