Found a 1933 Goudey #181 Babe Ruth today...

Took my breath away. This guy had dozens of 1933 Goudeys, some 1934 and some 1935 Goudey. Had a handful of good stars. All ungraded but in decent shape. The Ruth has no tears, no creases, good color but rounded corners. Probably a PSA 4 at best, although I've never seen a graded 33 Goudey up close so don't know what it would be. He wants about $5000.00 for it. Seems a bit high for a PSA 4 and I am looking for resale value so didn't buy it. But, still took my breath away!

Did I do a bad thing in passing this up? Anyone need any 33 Goudeys and want me to look for them for you? Arrangements can be made for me to get them for you, although I don't know the best method to work it out. I can't front thousands of bucks. This guy is not a sports card shop and is not selling online.

Just thought I'd pass this info along.

And you know they are not fake, how??

Smells of scam... if I were you I'd be grateful I didn't have the cash. Even if genuine that's a little rich to pay for a Ruth with rounded corners. Mine could be mistaken for VG-EX at a glance and it ran me a little over 1,000.

    Hi,
New member here, if anyone wants to send me $5,000 for an ungraded copy of one of the most reprinted cards, please feel free. The guy who has it doesn't have a card shop or the internet, but randomly decided $5,000 would be a nice round number.
  • I trust my knowledge base. They were not the reprints, know that for sure. This is guy who collected for years decades ago and is just now breaking out is collection to sell. Has a small store of odds and ends and antiques in the middle of nowhere. Didn't know much about the cards...showed me more he had from the 50s and 60s that were certainly all real. Of the 33 Goudeys, he had about 40+ commons, many with duplicates of various shapes. Don't see many fake commons around. He had 7-8 stars and duplicates of some of them. Took some pictures with my cell phone but they turned out crappy. Will try to post them anyway.

I would be absolutely shocked if these are fakes. I have a few 33 Goudeys myself and these looked exactly the same. I guess the only way to verify 100% would be to authenticate them though.
  • Alright, you guys don't know me, yet, since I am new to the site. Hopefully you will find out that I am legit when I start to offer my cards for sale soon. However, I understand the skepticism. I am always skeptical with rare vintage. These are not a scam. I've seen some scams...even talked a guy into letting me send a card in to be verified that I thought was a scam before I bought it. Turned out, I was right...no money changed hands. These are legit...personal collection of a dude.

But, thanks for the confirmation that the price was too steep. He priced them by buying a baseball card price guide book. He showed me the book and how he got to the prices. Looks like he priced them around NrMt in that book...which didn't list graded cards. Why isn't he selling online? He has his own store of odds and ends in BFE and just put them out last week with a bunch of other cards from the 50s and 60s. Talked to him for a while about them. I asked if he knew how much money he had in cards here...he said he wasn't sure that he hadn't collected in decades. I seriously doubt he even knows about the grading process or sells online.

Thanks for the responses though. I appreciate it.

P.S....would never ask anyone to send me $5000 for a card based solely on my word. I'm not that crazy!

If not reprints, it does sound as though he's a bit too optimistic as to what they'll bring - sort of like an uninformed individual seeing what a PSA 8 Ruth sells for, and then hoping their genuine, but beat-to-heck and thumbtacked example should bring kinda close to that price...

if you wanna make some $$ from the guy and you have decent feedback on ebay, you can offer to list the cards for sale and take 10% +fees. Or, work out a deal to list his cards in exchange for giving you the Ruth at a substantial discount. Maybe you can use your convincing skills to have him get them graded.

Certainly appears as though this antique dealer has his "babe in the woods" sales pitch routine down pat. I imagine in almost any decent sized town which has some antique dealers, there's always at least one who has a "stash" of Goudeys or whatever just waiting for the next fish who walks through the front door.

I would think that is probably a very savvy assessment.

    Way too much money.

Offer to send the cards thru PSA for him.

    I don't suppose there's a Lajoie there? I need a POS one but won't buy unless it's psa/scg
