Cowboys hire Wade Phillips as head coach

Not the kind of hire that will have Cowboy fans getting excited but perhaps better than Norv Turner.

Basically a "safe" choice but one which should leave the Dallas Cowboys mired in mediocrity. Thank you Jerry Jones...I won't have to worry about the Dallas Cowboys being a threat to win the NFC East for quite some time now.

Certainly ain't worried about Joe Gibbs either. Giants are the only tangible threat to the Eagles in the NFC East, but of course they just lost Tiki, and Eli it appears is no Peyton.

So...the future looks very bright for my Philadelphia Eagles continuing their domination of the NFC East for a number of seasons which has to help in the quest for the Super Bowl.

Jerry Jones - Thanks again. I might even join his fan club as my way of appreciation for what his meddling and getting rid of Jimmy Johnson has done to wreck the Dallas Cowboys...and I'm lovin' it.

    THANK YOU JERRY! image
  • image steve k...i agree with you and i think alot of people think that brandon jacobs can be a feature back and im just not so sure of it.i mean no one can run over people like that and carry the ball 25-30 times a game...i mean im not even sure who third string is there, and i usually know that kinda stuff...maybe they will go through free agency or the draft..who knows?

    I don't believe it.

Looks like Jerry hired a new puppet.

Does anyone remember the scenario of why Jimmy Johnson left the Cowboys? I remember hearing something about Jimmy giving a toast
at a party and saying something that made Jerry Jones angry and led him to fire Jimmy. What exactly did Jimmy say?

Johnson told the truth that himself was the one mainly responsible for the Cowboys success during that time. Jerry Jones and his huge ego didn't like the truth. If Johnson would have given Jones the credit for the success, Johnson would probably still be there and the Cowboys record I think would have definitely been much better.

Cowboys...Playoffs? 8 - 8 for the Cowboys in 2007 would be a miracle. There won't be no playoffs for no Cowboys fans for a good long time. Only Daniel Snyder picks worse coaches than Jerry Jones. image

Jacobs has done some interviews(post-announcement of Tiki's retiring) and he's said that to be a feature back he can't play the same way he does know. He's not just a big guy that drive through you, you can hurdle guys and catch the ball out of the backfield. I hope they give him the shot he's earned.

Yeah, no way the Boys are getting either Cowher of Fisher. But I think that Singletary would've beena great hire.

This is true. I dont like the way Jerry does things, he has no clue.

That said, I think they have too much talent not to make the playoffs.

Very suprised Phillips ended up being his choice of hire, definetaly a "mediocre" choice at best.

I will give Phillips his just due though, he did almost bring his team to the Super Bowl. That Frank Wychek? play on special teams that won the AFC championship game 6 years ago was a tuff break.

i think that jacobs deserves a chance, but there is no way he can replace tiki, let alone the one two combo of him and tiki...im sure the giants will be ok but it will put alot more pressure on eli and as i giants fan is that really where you want the pressure?

I thought it was Mackenzie Phillips.
  • Wade Phillips is a 3-4 guy and a good solid head coach

The Cowboys have drafted and signed defensive players during Parcells era to run the 3-4 and it didn't make sense to hire Rivera for example who happens to be a 4-3 guy

The Boys are way under the cap and will only add to the most talented roster in the NFC East

New coaching will take us over the top in 07 while the Eagles continue to figure out how to win a SuperBowl

    Dave

You guys were 29-21 and went to the playoffs 2 out of 3 years with Wade there as HC

You guys have done fantastic since then !!

  • When John Butler left for SD we got hurt - anyone could have coached the team he had together. Phillips musical QB crap hurt the team more than it helped, IMO.

Phillips will be 60 years old and has basically a proven track record of not getting to the big show as a head coach. I think in MLB a non-winning championship manager can win a championship late in life at say age 60 because it's not as much of a grind. A head coaching job in the NFL is brutal enough by itself, but especially a guy at 60 years old coaching for an owner who has an ego like Jerry Jones. This simply isn't a good fit here in my opinion. Parcells couldn't do it at his age and Wade Phillips is no Bill Parcells.

Phillips would have been fine as a head coach in a lesser pressure situation for some other team where expectations aren't that high. He may have done well there. I can't see him doing well in this situation.

  • I don't give a rats a$$ if he just turned 80, he will no doubt improve our defense and with the amount of money the Cowboys are under the cap there is no doubt in my mind we'll return to the playoffs only to go deeper.
