First Graded PSA 10 Designation
My grades popped today and while I wasn't overwhelmed with my own good fortune, I did have a couple cards that appear to be the first ones to receive the hallowed PSA 10. That started me thinking about how cool it is to have the first 10 and I decided that it would be really nice to have PSA add something to the flip which would testify to that fact . . . sort of along the lines of the Pedigree Service only it wouldn't have to include a name.
I think it would be fun for collectors to have those cards and I also think it would encourage submission of cards that might not ever be submitted otherwise. I mean, who doesn't want the first 1992 Ultra Spike Owen PSA 10?

Years from now, when I finish my Greenwell set I'm definitely going to start a Dwight Evans set. That guy was an awesome fielder. A Yaz set would be great though. I think the price tag on that keeps me from setting my crosshairs on it. Good luck.

I am a huge Dwight Evans fan. He was one of the best in the game, too bad he didn't get more appreciation. And he had a cannon for an arm.
I got to meet him a few years back, and he was as nice as I hoped he would be.

Yeah, GAI does this. Some people pan this idea as a marketing gimmick. Some people like it. I'm pretty much indifferent. It wouldn't bother me if PSA started doing some thing like this. I suppose the only real value is pride of ownership to have the first.
The problem with the way GAI does it is that they don't reserve the honor for the very high-end grades like 9.5 and 10. They do it for all the grades which I think is really ridiculous. Really, does anyone care that they have the first graded PSA 7 of some obscure card when there's plenty of higher grades for the very same card available?
<< <i>FYI Evans lives here in my hometown, nicest guy you could ever meet. I still hate the fact he was traded in his twilight years >>
Yeah, him going to Baltimore was crushing to me. My Dad and Dwight were my role models growing up. After I met him, I wrote him a long letter telling him how much I appreciated him as a kid growing up, and how I tried to be like him. Even though I am a grown man, I just wanted to let him know what an impact he had on me as a kid.
A couple of weeks after I sent the letter, I got a big envelope. Dwight had read my letter and wrote back thanking me. He also included a signed and inscribed photo to me. It is now one of my most cherished items.

I agree that if this was something that PSA would consider doing that it would be best to reserve it for 10's only.
Another thing I thought about over the last few days was that a "work-around" to any potential problems PSA might have putting the 10 designation on the actual flip would be to list the "First 10" designation when you do a cert search on their web site.

"Why don't you just make 10 louder and make 10 the top number......yeah, but these go to 11."

<< <i>PSA could never do this now. There have been way to many cards graded already. >>
I understand they couldn't realistically go back and re-do the flips from cards already graded, but I bet the records they use for the pop reports are tied to the certs in some way. On the surface it seems like it wouldn't be that difficult to figure out which cards were graded 10 first and list that fact on the cert search page in the very least.
