OT: Does anyone here use dial-up?

I was just curious if people still used dial-up and how many. With the cost of high speed cable internet I was surprised to read there were still some out there who dialed-up. Anyone?

  • *slowly raising hand* yep I do.

Changing next month. I was stalling because Im worried that many whom I have dealt with in the past might try to find me later in life and not be able to. (pre-website contacts) Early on I didnt save contact info like I do now. Switching providers so I need a new email. Oh well. Wife wants to pay bills faster. Have high speed at work and thats all I need !!!!

Hey what do you mean by that !!!! LOL ** love those commercials.

We have dialup at the post office branch that I work at. One phone line, so if we need to go online it shuts off the phone. And before you start asking if we have more than one traffic lite, well they're saving up for the first one.

Sometimes it's nice to be back in the 1950s.

  • RC, I no longer have AOL (I've got the cable thingy from Charter) but I still use my AOL address by just going to AOL.com.

  • Not only do I have dial up, since we recently moved I have yet to run the cable so I have to string it across the living room and plug it in each time.

  • With how heavy my Internet use is, and considering I upload and download a ton of huge files for work, I would probably hang myself if I had to drop back to dial-up for more than a day or two. Aside from e-mail, the Internet is pretty bandwidth intensive these days.

Even when I lived in Vermont, DSL was an option, and not too much pricier than dialup.

My GF's dad still uses dial-up, even though he lives in an area with cable and DSL and can afford to upgrade. I think he just fears change and potential hassle. I wonder if that's not the case for a lot of current dial-up users.

  • I would go nuts if I had to go back to dial up. Crap we went out of town and this hotel only had dial up... shoot I fell asleep just waiting for it to work.

I feel for you dial up users, but guess it's better then nothing.

I have cable at home and DSL at my office.

    I don't see a ton of difference.

But, dial up? Holy crap! I don't remember it - does it really take a long time?

For those who live in areas without DSL or cable? Wow! I didn't think that still existed.

I hope ya get it soon - I think I would do a lot less posting if I had long waits.

I think for those who still have dial-up; once they get a taste of
cable or dsl, they won't go back. Price is about the same nowadays.
You dial-uppers must stop fearing change.
  • WiMax will hopefully give rural customers another option in the comming years and will be faster than dial-up.

My guess is, if you live in such a rural area that Cable or DSL is not available, you're living there for a reason.... but I'm sure it's just a matter of time before something becomes available, maybe even the cost of satellite will come down to reality soon. If you have a cellular signal, talk to your cell phone providers about getting a Cellular modem (laptop users.) Or, if you have a Blackberry made within the past year or so and are paying for data service, you can use it to dial up with too, and you'd get a much better connection than regular dial-up. Look into that!

I'm an IT guy, so wireless DSL at home, and an extremely beefy DS3 connection at work. For those of you that don't know what a DS3 connection is capable of, let's just say I can download a 300mb file at work in less than 2-3 minutes. Makes sniping a little easier at work, that's for sure!

ALWAYS Looking for Chris Sabo cards!

  • Russ,

I love that you actually explained what a DS3 thingy is in lamen's terms and I still don't get it. image

    LOL
