Which is the BEST multi-player rookie card?

Of all the multi-player rookie cards, which one features players that had the best combined careers? For example, 1973 Mike Schmidt/Ron Cey(even though it isn't his true RC), features two ballplayers, with a combined x amount of HR, SLG%, Wins, MVP's, etc...

Who can show an example of the best such card they can find?

I am sure this is cheating, but the Magic/Bird card is far and away the best. Molitor/Trammell is pretty good too.
I am buying and trading for RC's of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Bob Cousy!

  • Good choice there skinpinch.

Another obvious choice for me would be the 1968 Nolan Ryan/Jerry Koosman.

We all know about Ryan, but Koosman was no slouch. 222 wins, 2 time all-star, and placed in top category for several years. Ryan should not be embarrased that he had to share his RC with Koosman.

Not cheating all all. Magic/Bird is by far the best I can recall of any sport.

I'd say the Nolan Ryan-Jerry Koosman card is pretty tough to beat. Is the Schmidt card not Ron Cey's rookie? If it was, I'd choose that one (primarily because Koosman = Cey but Schmidt > Ryan)

I concur. Magic/Bird takes the cake by far. Then I'd go with Ryan/Koosman, followed by Molitor/Trammell.

The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
  • Magic / Bird #1 without a doubt followed closely by the 81 Topps Hubie Brooks / Mookie Wilson RC

    Dave
  • In terms of hits, Pete Rose/Ken McMullen/Al Weis comes in #1, followed by Molitor/Trammell I think...

    Edit to add:

    Molitor/Trammell/Klutts/Washington is #1 with 6516
    Rose/Weis/McMullen/Gonzalez has 6139

How about the '78 Catchers--Dale Murphy/Bo Diaz/Ernie Whitt/Lance Parrish--all four players appeared in an all star game at one point or another. Any other cards where all the players on the card were all stars (at least once?)
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

That was second just in '81 Topps as the clear #1 was Valenzuela/Scioscia. (I admit I am a bias Dodger fan though.)

Don't forget the 3rd guy on that Bird and Magic rookie - Julius Erving. It's not his rookie, but he is still on the multi-player rookie card.

Magic/Bird, with Ryan/Koosman coming in a close second.
    Who is Rober Maris?
  • Magic/Bird would be tough to beat. But then what about just baseball?

    Koosman/Ryan, very good.

    Molitor/Trammell, yes.

Any others? What about ones where all four guys have been pretty good on a card that may compete?
  • The 78T Dale M was not his RC. He was on another 4-player RC in 77. Why he was included on ANOTHER multi in 78 is stupid.....one card i always liked, aside from the obvious ones, is the 82T Mike Marshall/Steve Sax. Those were two solid players in the 80s. That 82 set should be more loaded than it is!! Another one coming to mind is the 72T Carlton Fisk/Cecil Cooper. Cooper was one helluva underrated player!!
  • Does the 1988 Fleer Mark Grace/Darrin Jackson count?

I know the 78 was not Murphy's rookie, but it doesn't take away from the fact that he appeared on it. You still have 4 all stars on that card...

While not the best multi-player rookie card, the '71 Topps Baylor, Baker and Paciorek is a pretty cool one. I think it's the true rookie for all 3, and I think they all made the All-Star team at one point.

Good one! I forgot about that card. 4 all star appearances between the three, 5200+ combined hits

I don't think anything will top the Bird/Magic rookie. On the other hand, this was no accident either like Ryan/Koosman, Schmidt/Cey, etc., in which the individuals pictured just happened to have turned out to be great, long term players. I was one of the lucky ones that just happened to gotten this card way back as a kid from a pack. Both Bird and Magic were big headline names at the time the card came out so I thought it was unusual that Topps put them both on the same card with Dr. J tossed in for good measure. More likely, this was the card that they intended to be the carrot for collectors to buy zillions of packs.

**EDIT: God, I miss that card image

Only baseball card with two HOF rookies I believe... 1941 Double Play Johnny Mize / Enos Slaughter.

It's not as good as Ryan/Koosman, but Don Sutton shares his rookie card with Bill Singer.
Three of the four players on the 1963 Max Alvis/Bob Bailey/Pedro (Tony) Oliva/Ed Kranepool card were all-stars at least once, and the fourth (Bailey) had a decent career.

Not the best, but pretty nice...

1970 Topps Vida Blue / Gene Tenace

Both were key members of the A's team that took 5 straight trips to the ALCS (71-75), and 3 straight WS championships (72-74).
    My Giants collection want list

WTB: 2001 Leaf Rookies & Stars Longevity: Ryan Jensen #/25
  • Molitor/Trammel is my fave. as they were both in my top list of baseball players.

bird/magic is untouchable for talent and impact.

    I also like Fisk/cooper image

I know that Nolan Ryan gets a lot of love around here and in the hobby in general. I thought I'd share this article which I found very interesting...

    63 Rose rookie is nice.

The Steve Carlton rookie is decent.

Ryan/Koosman is a tuff one to beat though.

    Steve

    Good for you.

Has anyone mentioned the Don Baylor/Dusty Baker rookie? I think that is a pretty neat combination as well.

    - Joe
  • I have to favor.........

    1986 Fleer Jose Canseco/Eric Plunk

All other options in this category are nowhere even close to the status and legacy of this card

A little more modern. 1993 Topps #701 Top Catcher Prospects with Piazza / Delgado / Fordyce (pathetic O's fan, I know) / and some other guy.

I collected that set from packs with my father when I was 9, and I remember whenI pulled a gold version of that card. Sitting in the passenger seat of my dad's brand new Ford F-250 (colonial white, if you must know). He had just picked my sister and I up from school, and we stopped at 7-11 to buy a few packs, just like we did 2-3 times a week.

Not quite the star power of Magic/Bird. Not even Ryan/Koosman. Hall of fame Catcher, great 1B, Orioles catcher.

But it does carry some memories with it.

    I'm off my soapbox,

    Ian (rugbymarine)
