OT: Heartburn

Anyone have any quick home remedies to rid of this?
I've had it bad for 3 days now within the past week.
Most lasting up to 12 hours. Pepcid, and tums were what
I had and it didn't help. I hope I don't have acid reflux
disease. Any suggestions besides calling my doctor? image

I had the same thing, and found dropping some weight totally got rid of it.
Not as easy as a pill, but in the end a lot more satisfying.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

  • Tums and rolaids works fast. Maloxx works better but takes about 30 minutes to kick in. And Prilosec is now available over the counter (used to be prescription) and that will knock it back for a few months if you take the recommended dosage.

I have had off and on acid reflux my entire life including childhood. It HAS ALWAYS been brought about by eating things that I should not. Never has it lasted for 3 days or even 15 minutes. Usually one or two tums, rolaids, etc and it is gone until the next time I eat the bad stuff.

  • Yep, recommend a DR.

    But,

I had a co worker who swore by pickle juice for heartburn. It was all she took.

Alum is frequently used in pickles to give them some snap, I don't know if that's a form of aluminum like is in Rolaids so I don't know if that's why she found it effective. But it is mostly vinegar, and natural therapy folks always say a little vinegar is effective for a sour stomach, so I suspect that's why she found relief.

I tried it once and it did work.

    Good Luck

I was reading up on heartburn last night at 4AM cos it wouldn't let me go to sleep. I have gained about 30-35 pounds within the last 7 months, but I'm only at 200 pounds and I'm 5" 11". My wife and I had quit smoking, so the weight may be a factor. I've rarely ever had heartburn, so this sucks and it sucks bad.
  • If this is the first time you've had, you're lucky. TUMS should work--in fact, you will never leave home without a roll. Go to the gas station and pick up a pack!

  • E,

    Love that puppy photo!

Have you been under a lot of stress?

Congrats on quiting! My wife and I both recently quit as well....I stopped in August and she stopped a couple of months later.
THANK YOU CHANTIX!!!! I have also put on about 20 lbs or so since then and have had a little more heartburn as well. I think if I could just lay off the hot wings and giant burritos, it might go away! Prilosec does wonders, but it probably has to do with the extra weight your body is not used to. If you can figure a way to cut down on the eating, let me know!
    Good luck!

EXACTLY! I never get heartburn on the many days I eat "right" Its the above kind of things I have a weakness for that brings it on. I have a bottle of Mylanta in the bathroom. One sip does wonders.

I'm not a Doctor, but I've had heartburn off & on for about 15 years now. It , in my case is largely a function of my diet. When I eat or drink different things, the results are very noticable ,at least for me.

I LOVE starbucks coffee, but when I changed to a less acidic brand, my heartburn dropped off the map. I still LOVE starbucks but know I can't drink it as often as I would love too. I love chocolate, but there is something in Nestles that sends my stomach nuts. I actually throw up. There are numerous things that I used to love to eat or drink . I still love them, but not as much. I'm not sure how old you are but as us dudes get older, it can be depressing how our bodies change.

Heartburn and you have lots of time and a crap load of money == see a doctor( It is a money making business with NO guarentees. Side effects can be wonderfull , especially if you don't care)

I'd Goggle " heartburn " , wean out the 4-profit mostly advice, see what other real people have to say. The very fact that you reach out at all is a great 1st step. Hope the best for you!!

    OK,

This may sound strange, and certainly may not be the remedy in your case, but its worth a try to find out...

Often the problem is that there isnt ENOUGH acid in the stomach, rather than too much.

Try taking a teaspoon of vinegar.

The worst thing that can happen is it tastes like crap going down. The best scenario is that you are suffering from not ENOUGH acid, in which case the vinegar will immediately help your situation.

    Edited to add....

I just read the reply regarding vinegar....which is exactly why that works. Vinegar working means there is not enough acid as opposed to too much which is the common belief.

Thanks for all the tips/advice everyone.
I've got an appt. with my doctor tomorrow afternoon just to have a look-see and get it out of the way. Right now, I'm almost afraid to eat anything. Looking back in the past week; I have been eating a lot of spicy foods. I've actually been doing the cooking and trying out new receipes involving onions, garlic, red chili peppers (rooster sauce type). Thought I was catching a cold so I also over did it with a ton of juice yesterday as well. I'm sure these are all contributing factors that I'm not used to. Think I'll lay off all that stuff for now.

Stress has been another factor as well. Within the past 4 months, I've lost my job; I've lost 2 family members, and I almost lost my dad; but my dad pulled thru. My wife had an abnormal pap test which was on the cancer side and has been going for test after test to remove these irregular cells. That made her quit smoking right then and there on that first date she found out. So cigarettes are now out of our lives for over 4 months now. No cravings or anything....all on cold turkey. No wonder I'm on Prozac & Xanax (love this stuff).

Anyways, I'm picking up some Zantac later and some apple cider vinegar. I just need to get some sleep. Hopefully, it's nothing serious and I'll find out more tomorrow. Thanks everyone!
  • I think drinking can cause heartburn too. For a while, I would get heartburn with a spicy meal and a margarita. I found I could have one or the other, but not both. I've since lost some weight, and things are better.

    Prilosec is a miracle cure.

BUT, it can take a day to kick in real good the first time you try it.

When Prilosec required a scrip, it cost $3.00 with the insurance.
Now that it is over the counter, the same quantity is $30.00+
    at COSTCO.

PREVACID, similar efficacy to Prilosec, is still scrip.

VA hospitals still dispense Prilosec as a scrip; no charge to retirees.

  • I think eating more than you can digest is the main problem, and spicy foods, especially pizza can cause it.

For me, nothing works better than a big spoon full of baking soda in a small glass of water. Just dump it in and gulp it down while it fizzles. image

I used to have heartburn nearly everyday, but in the last 8 or 9 months since I seperated from my wife, I've changed my diet, exercise every day, and went from 190 lbs to 145 lbs. I haven't have heartburn since she left... traded it in for heartache image
