Need real world value for Philippine coin

ajaanajaan Posts: 17,455 ✭✭✭✭✭
I know there are a few members here who actively collect US Phil coins. I need the real value, as compared to Krause value, for a 1903 Peso U.S. PHIL PCGS AU58. Thanks.

    She's a beauty alright! image

In MS63, the 03 Peso goes for around $300-400, so I would guess this nice example would fetch over $100.

I don't know the value, but that is a beautiful coin.
  • Lyman's catalog price

    AU = $65.00
    MS60 = $160.00

    Nice coin!

I bought a 1905-S in an ANACS AU50 slab for $75 at the last FUN show I attended (actually, the last time I saw you, Shroomdude).

That's a fair price! The 05-S is a semi-key. Very hard to find in UNC. Now the killer question ..... is it a curved or straight serif? There were two dies used for the 05-S. Look at the 1 in the date. Is the top stroke of the 1 curved (like ajaan's) or does it go straight down? The latter is rarer and commands a premium. I sold an EF45 straight serif a few years ago for $100.

    I forget.

I think Cladiator bought the coin from me.

When the dealer I bought it from said 75 bucks, I whipped my wallet out like a gunslinger.

Let's see how NGC does against your PCGS bag boy!

  • I'd agree with Filam; about $100 but a bit higher. Two friends of mine have been selling US Philippines on eBay and they're averaging catalog plus 73%. With catalog at $65; 73% over puts it at about $115.

But that's for a run of the mill 1903 in AU, so figure AU 55. This is AU 58, a tad better, and a heck of a nice coin to look at. I'd say $130 would be a stretch, but not by much.

  • Dear Ajaan:

Real world value for the coin? A friend in the Philippines keeps track of the auction prices realized on eBay, and here's what he told me about sales of certified 1907-S'es//

    AU53 ANACS -- $20

    AU58 ANACS -- $58

    AU58 NGC -- $71

    MS62 NGC -- $121

    MS62 PCGS -- $154

    MS63 PCGS -- $255

Clearly, I was waaay to rosy in my earlier estimate. These numbers are the reality. Hope they help.

    Best wishes, teacher,

But this is an 03! image

BTW, Mr Fun, the teacher already sold his 03 in 58 last week for $127.

I assume the NGC currently on ebay will go for about the same.

  • Oh gosh, Mr. Filam. I'm brain dead. Somebody was asking me about the 1907-S, and at 66 I can't remember who! Sheesh. Oh well, maybe it will come back to me.

And I just checked my friend's listing, and Ajaan's in Au 58 was the only 1903 business strike peso sold so far this year. Hey and I estimated 115 to $130, and it landed at $127. Not too shabby.

On another subject, will you be able to get together with Kakashi, Bright Young Filipina, and me, for another one of our coin nights, when I head into Manila next month?

    Warm regards,

Scarce! Not too many of these around I suspect. Over $1k in low-end unc and multiple thousands in choice/gem condition. Have no idea what a scratched example with AU details goes for. Guess I'd be happy if it goes over $300.

Sure, Mr Fun. That'd be swell! Always a pleasure!! image
  • The 1903 peso is middle of the road in unc. The three easiest dates are the 1904, the 1904-S, and the 1908-S.

The three hardest dates in unc (in any grade) are the 1906-S, the '12-S, with the 1911-S and 1905-S tied for third place.

In gem unc, however, the 1903 is impossible. Neither PCGS nor NGC has certified any.

Likewise for the 05-S (either variety) or the 1906-S: no gems certified. These dates are followed closely in difficulty by the 1904-S (1 gem); and the 1908-S and 1912-S for which there are two gems each. A 1912-S in MS-65 recently sold for $62K at auction.

The reason the 1904-S is so easy in unc and difficult in gem is that recently a half bag of them was found -- and all the coins were full of bag marks, making them candidates for anything from AU-58 to MS63.

    Best wishes,
