Snipe explanation?

I lost 2 auctions at the last minute yesterday, one for a gorgeous 59 Aaron PSA 7. I had entered my maximum bid, which of course lost to the snipe.
Can you explain to me how snipes work?
What's the difference between a snipe and a maximum bid? Say I was willing to spend $200 max on the Aaron, would it matter if I sniped or used max bid?
Thanks for any help - I REALLY wanted that Aaron.

Entering your maximum bid - outside of a snipe program -
allows your bid to be run up by AH underbidders or shills.
Enter your max in the snipe, and you may win the item for
much less.

I second what storm says.
You can either sign up for the free service but you only get 5 snipes a week. For $5 / month, you get unlimited snipes.
I've never had problems / issues with the service.
It tracks sales of graded cards on ebay and every major auction house, and notifies me when a card on my want list is offered.
I searched for '59 Aaron in PSA 7 and it showed me every sale, the price, and a link to the last 17 sales so I could actually see the card (to see if it was high end for the grade or a slider).
If you only want SGC prices it is free (they have a deal with SGC) but that only gives you about 11% of the market. If you want PSA, GAI, Beckett and SGC it's $99 a year or 9.99 a month. I think it's well worth the money.
BTW, I had justsnipe fail on half a dozen occasions. I switched to bidnapper.com

I started by using their free auction notification service for several months before signing up for their premium service. I am doing both the 1956 baseball and football Topps sets. You just create a want list and what the minimum grade (for any or all grading companies) and you will get an e-mail letting you know of a new auction. The e-mail will have a link to the auction. In my case on the 56 baseball, I want a PSA 6 or higher. So any time a PSA 6 or higher in my want list comes up on Ebay, I get an e-mail. Usually if I buy a PSA 6, then I change the want list of that card to a PSA 7.
As for justsnipe, I use the free 5 a week service and have had no problems. By only doing the 5 free a week, it keeps me from bidding on too many cards.
<< <i>I use bidnip, it's really convenient when it comes to an auction that I really want to win. Plus it's only $5 for 20 snipes. >>
Just Snipe is $5/month for unlimited snipes...
Griffin, that's interesting how much more this Aaron went for, although it was beautifully centered with sharp corners. 30 days history of completed sales on eBay is not enough to get a good feel for a card's value. I was certain with an SMR of $130 that I'd get the card under $200.
Lost on a 59 Berra tonite, PSA 8. SMR $185. I went to $212 on maximum bid. Snipe got it at $214. Who knows how high the snipe may have been set.
Seems like things may be picking up for sellers?
