I'm back on the wagon...... or off the wagon..... whatever

Hey guys,
Been a while. After a little break from the hobby, I was going through some of my cards a week ago and got the itch again. I also decided to refocus and simplify my collection by looking at all this stuff realistically. Here was the stuff that I realized:

- I like rookie cards and other cards of importance of great players, and everything else is extraneous. I don't need or want a 1996 Leaf Silver Eddie Murray.
- I really don't care that much whether a card is PSA 8 quality or PSA 9 quality, as long as it's pleasing to the eye. If I have to look really close to see a defect, it's fairly insignificant to me.
- I don't like my cards in a slab. Just don't like the way they look. I think grading serves it's purpose in terms of being able to buy and sell with a reasonable degree of confidence, but for my collecting purposes it means nothing to me.
- I'd rather have twenty $10 PSA 8's than one $200 PSA 10.
- Bad centering bothers me more than any other common flaw.
- I don't care whether a player is in the HOF or not. I loved watching Andre Dawson and Joe Carter, while I would never go out of my way to see Dave Winfield, Tony Perez or Don Sutton. I'm not going to let the fickle Hall voters decide which cards I should go after.
- Similarly, I'm not going to let public perception tell me what cards to go after. I'd rather buy a Bernard King RC than a Scottie Pippen RC.

Basically, over the years I've built what I would consider a fairly decent collection, I've gotten to open some really cool vintage material, and I've had a lot of fun. I also enjoy the challenge of making a few bucks while adding to my collection. This is what a hobby is all about, and I think it's good to step back when you get too involved in order to see things from a different perspective. I'm now comfortable diving back in and hopefully not going a little overboard like I have in the past. Here are my most recent additions:

It is nice to have you back. It sounds like a sound plan of attack to reconsider your collecting goals. The hard part is to stay true to them. I look forward to your future posts of your additions.

Thats funny. I was just thinking about you the other day. I was wondering what happened to you.

    Welcome back!

Are you still doing the poker thing?

Yep, me too. Or 5 $100 PSA 8's rather than one $500 PSA 9. And so on.

    Welcome back!

    Thanks mch.

lawn- Still chugging along on the poker tables, but the US gov't has made it tough to get money to any online sites, meaning the bad players will find other ways of gambling that don't put money in my pocket. I've decided to refocus that part of my life as well and target live tournaments, which is a fairly big risk, but one with a potential windfall if I can break a big one. I had a pretty good week in January where I finished 13th and 8th in $1,000 and $750 buyin tourneys. Considering I've only played three tourneys total this year, I could be doing worse, but it's also frustrating when you repeatedly get far but can't get anything done at the final table. For example, in the $750 buyin I had to "settle" for $8,100, when there were only 7 people standing in the way of $80,000 (I know..... poor me). The WSOP has been poison for me the last few years, so I think I'll skip that this year and just shoot for tourneys on the east coast.

Welcome back. I remember winning one of you auctions in the past and you sent me some great 75 Topps basketball. Best of luck with you new collecting focus, and I will look forward to any future auctions you might have.

    Lee,

First off, welcome back. I think your refocus is key and if you find yourself getting more involved than you wanted to again, take another break. This should be fun and if it takes more away from time you wanted to spend endevoring other things, well then, you owe it to your loved ones to not let this hobby get the best of you.

As for the WSOP, I think you should give it another go this year. As you said, the armchair poker players are leaving to a degree, so I think that may be a blessing for the WSOP. Not for the ratings on ESPN image but for the guys that can actually sustain playing competively and not praying for a lucky streak to win a buy-in and then another lucky streak to get them into the money on the WSOP.

Just a though for you to ponder, but I think this year will be a much different landscape without all the internet players winning buy-ins. You know, the type of guys that call all in on their A-5 off when you push them in on your KK.

Glad to see you back and know that things are going well with you.

    Here's to you buddy!
