Who now inherits the Dan Marino "great quarterback but..." title?

Since the Colts won the super bowl and Peyton is getting his ring who does the Dan Marino "great quarterback but no super bowl ring"
title fall to? On PTI tonight general agreement was Donovan McNabb.

    I'd vote for Jim Kelly.

The no title thing is really ridiculas imo, take a look at the game last night, Manning had a good game certainly not an "MVP" performance. That being said, the defensive play and Dominic Rhodes were significant in the win, a championship is a TEAM effort and I refuse to hold any QB accountable for no Super Bowl win. Marino was one of the BEST QB's to play the game, Manning as well wether or not the Colts won last night or not,end of story-case closed.

    Trent Dilfer....Super Bowl winning QB.
Dan Marino....Super Bowl losing QB. See what Im talking about!!!!

Probably the discussion was focused on active quarterbacks. Yes, McNabb certainly could qualify but it's still too early in my opinion, in his career, to refer to McNabb as a "great" all-time quarterback in the same vane as a Marino, Kelly, etc.
  • I don't think McNabb is an 'all-time great' just yet. And if a QB has to have the title of great quarterback but hasn't won a superbowl yet, I'd say Steve McNair before I'd say McNabb...
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

Wow, did not think anyone would think I was serious . . . . image

There are several BACKUPs better than Grossman -- three years from now you will hear the name "Rex Grossman" as often as "Trent Dilfer"

Other than Brady and Manning, which active QBs can be considered "Great"? McNabb is good, but a notch below Brady and Manning.
  • ik you werent serious...someone saying that seriously would have to of never watched a bears game lol...i was just adding to it how really terrible he is lol...sorry for the confusion!

Dont worry, people who think they know football will always find someone to give the "cant win the big game crown" to someone soon enough. I could see maybe Carson Palmer inheriting the award sometime down the road.
  • although i love carson, i dont think that he is good enough for that to be put upon him...also i think that the bengals are more of a team, win together lose together, than colts were when peyton had to do everything on his own.

I think what the fuss is about is the stats of a great career, Dilfer didn't have that but he does have a super bowl ring but it means
nothing except to himself, Marino had the stats but no ring and it means a lot to many people.

The super bowl itself is looked upon as a sort of coronation ceremony for the really impressive QB's that is needed to validate you
as one of the best. It is all just a bit too much, Marino will always be great but not having a ring will dog him the rest of his life,
he can't get away from it as much as I'm sure he would like to.

I remember years ago he was not invited to some super bowl party that other QB's were invited to and he was angry
about it, he says it was because he never on a super bowl winning team.
  • It is an absolute joke for anyone to even consider that a QB needs a Super Bowl win to validate a career. Based on that supremely shallow logic, that would render pointless to even consider any player, other than a QB, for Hall of Fame enshrinment. Why even bother putting Lawrence Taylor in the Hall of Fame, after all it is the QB that wins the rings, right? Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith, you need not apply for the Hall of Fame, because Troy Aikman has three rings.

As for QB's that would not invite Fran Tarkenton to a Super Bowl party, I hope Bob Griese wasn't one of them. His two Super Bowl combined performance of 164 yards, one touchdown and one INT...while he watched the running game and defense do all the work, really make his career more valid than Tarkenton's, or Dan Marino's?...yeah o.k.

If two equally talented QB's given equally surrounding team members square off three times in a row in the Super Bowl, just based on simply odds and luck, it is not a surpirse one bit that one of them wins all three Super Bowls. Yet one will be labled a choker, and the other a 'winner'. It is a total lack of understanding of what is at work. It is a T.V. show mentality...a hero and a choker is more exciting than just plain odds/luck.

Then when you add that two equal QB's almost never have equal surroundings, welll, unless one is a moron, no need to elaborate.

By the way, Peyton Manning is the first QB in history to 'win' a Super Bowl with a defense ranked out of the top ten in points allowed(they were 23rd). In the playoffs, they played like their good defense of last year, and bailed Manning out! If the defense played like they played all year, they are out game one! Yet he is now validated? Much like all the other QB's who win because they are good, but their teammates are also elite. It is luck, chance, and circumstance for all those Super Bowl winning QB's(compared to guys like Marino, and Tarkenton).

Terry Bradshaw is still the most mediocre QB with 4 SB rings. He's benefitted most from the mindset of heaping all the glory of victory on the QB. The giveaway in this case is it was the defense that had the cool nickname. When your defense has a nickname, they more than likely are mostly responsible for winning a vast majority of the games.
