Are you saying, building a high quality collection has everything to do with the registries? I think you have stumbled onto something here........please tell us more!

    "Chit Happens".

For some Ebay is the only answer to get more than 1 coin a year and not traveling hundreds upon hundreds of miles to obtain a coin.

Man...I use "Ebay" as an analogy to semi-junkl coins...only because I have read a thousand whiney f'ing threads on the coin board about it...and you guys get all pantie-wadded!!

Say what? You could have a higher GPA for the same bucks if you buy coins that are low end for the grade. Gotta trade those PQ gems for higher grade dogs then! image

Yup, I do believe I read somewhere that there are no bad MS-64's...but you can definatly get a bad MS-67 image
  • gpa is not every thing in my opion i do not mind buying ms 64 0r 63's on ebay if the the coins are great since i can't make it to every show
  • In the paragraph introducing the Copper, Nickel and Silver Type Set, PCGS says that "The focus of type collecting is definitely on condition," yet even with the Type Sets the set rankings are determined by the Set Ratings, and not by the Weighted GPA's. I can only conclude that PCGS's view regarding ALL of the registry sets is not only that GPA is NOT everything, it's not even the most important thing - Set Rating is. To me, GPA is just one factor, albeit a very important one, to consider. I also consider eye appeal, weight, cost, rarity, relative value, set completeness, "optimum buying grade," and whether I'm allowed a choice between business strikes and proofs, all in arriving at the decision of how I choose to allocate my money.

I collect 20-slab, blue plastic PCGS coin boxes. To me, every empty box is like a beating heartimage NOT.

People come up sometimes, and ask me, G99G, are you kidding? And I answer them no, I am NOT KIDDING.

    Every empty box?
    C'mon!

I've been saying that to years especially to the yahoos that sell modern crap telling folks it's a good investment which I feel is right next to or actually under a bottom feeder.
Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that held its ground.
  • I call it bluesheet bid quality crap. Too many high grade coins out there that just don't stand for the grade.

    Old statement...

But if you have a set of say.....Saintsimage, that is 100% complete with a 60.00 GPA, should it rank higher than a 92% complete set with a 65.5 GPA?

Let's not bother with the fact that the second example could buy 3 sets of the other grade. image

  • Absolutely not
