So add 2 more 1971 FB HOF rcs...

Charlie Sanders and Roger Wehrli, making the total of 5. I love this set. Anyone have any experience with these two cards?

The Wehrli has 23 8's and ZERO 9's or 10's!!!! Sanders has 17 8's and 3 9's and ZERO 10's.

  • I started this set in 8 or better about a year ago. Hard to figure if just not that many have been graded or too condition sensitive to get high grades. VERY few Sanders have come up as I recall but did get an 8 Wehrli not long ago for $7 - This was the first set I collected as a kid so that was my motivation but without question is a key set for the foundation of the Steeler and Dolphin dynasties.

FWIW I think this is THE most undervalued mainstream set-- of any sport-- post 1970. These cards are just impossible in PSA 9 or better. 1971 Topps baseball and 1974 OPC hockey may be tougher, but the prices for these cards reflects their difficulty. Not so for the 1971 football. The paper stock is terrible, and of course you have the colored borders to deal with. PSA 9's can be picked up for about $35-50 each on Ebay, which IMO is a total steal. At some point two big hitters are going to start putting this set together at the same time, and when that happens the sparks will fly for high grade specimens.

I gaurantee if you put that card on eBay right now it would sell for over $100. There is a PSA 8 Sanders on right now that's at $51 with 2+ days to go. I bet that one tops $100 too.

$7 for a Wehrli 8??? I just picked one up and I assure it did not go for anywhere near $7. image
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

71 Topps is a great set. Very tough in high grade though, the stock is terrible and many cards, even in PSA 8 holders, have wrinkles near the top border from the cutting process. The centering is terrible on many of the cards and the colored borders make for difficult corner grades. I have Sanders and Wehrli in 7's, haven't seen 8's in a while. I know Greg (GregM) had one of the 3 PSA 9 Sanders and he got a nice chunk of change for it. Not sure who bought it, but I have a guess.
