Seeking advice on CROSSOVERS: Is it worth it?

I just began to get my cards graded and am seeking some knowledgable opinions from seasoned collectors of graded cards. Some ten plus years ago I purchased three wax boxes of 1975 Topps Minis. Every so often, my brother and I would open a pack... Cut to last week and this one Brett we pulled was simply amazing. After some debate, I decided to drive it down to PSA for a walk thru and it received a 9. Now, while that's a nice grade, for the life of me I cannot divine why this pack fresh card did not get a 10. Is it possible to resubmit it/challenge the grade? Do they ever admit they've made a mistake, or as a rule does PSA stand by its grades in perpetuity? In a side question, would anyone advise crossing over a BVG 9 1972 Topps Pete Rose with two 10 sub-grades in an attempt to get a PSA 10? Is it worth it, especially when it's not for resale but rather a private collection? Opinions truly appreciated. Thanks. MC.

    In my opinion 10's are a total crapshoot.

    However, if you definately think the Brett is 10 worthy you should re-submit the card. I highly doubt they would review it and change the grade. As for re-submitting the Rose - it is probably not worth it until you plan on selling the card.

    I think you should try to get the grade that you believe a card deserves;
    but, you have to be reasonable and accept the results after a couple of trys.

    Crack and resubmit, crack and resubmit, crack and resubmit.

    Have you had luck with the 'crack and resubmit' theory? It's still a subjective thing at the end of the day, so I bet it can yield the desired result after enough tries, right? If so, how do you recommend opening a graded slab? Thanks much.

    Matt - That is exactly what I was thinking (After enough tries,
    hopefully you will get the grade you want). However, I am not
    the one to ask about resubs. About cracking the slab, I saw off
    one of the top corners, insert a flathead, and CAREFULLY pry until
    plastic comes apart.

    Your card, no matter who slabs it, no matter how many times you "crack and resubmit", and no matter what it says in the label, is still the same card, in the same grade. Grading services do not change cards--they simply give opinions on the grade. Opinions might change, but the card does not. If this is for a private collection, I don't see why it's in a slab to begin with. It simply doesn't matter. As for "pack fresh" cards not receiving a gem mint grade--most pack fresh cards are nowhere near mint, not with the older issues. If you pulled a mint card out of a 30 year old pack, you did excellent.

    Well reasoned. That is sound advice taken. As I mentioned there was debate over whether to grade it at all, but the temptation was there because the card just looked so flawless-- the thought of having the x'th GEM 10 won out. But you are right on all counts. Thanks.
