Sorry about poor picture, but this is a PCGS MS65 Meiji 3 (1870) 5 Sen.

image The Japanese type set is one I keep coming back to. Thanks for posting the picture!

  • Y#1, shallow scale variety, with a weaker than usual strike, which leads me to respectfully disagree with PCGS and call it an MS60. Even so, it would certainly fill a hole in my collection. image

Damn Bill, you picked that up when you were a kid didn't you!!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • Marty,
Bought that one and 5 other Meiji 3's in 1971 in Misawa, Japan. The early part of that type set I showed you was in a hoard I bought. And yes, I was just a kid then which would make it prior to the time of your conception! image Bill.

Nice coin mayor1. I know of few images in the coin world that are nicer than that Japanese Dragon. Good job getting that MS65. I wouldn't let it out of that slab if I were you!image

That last post went up without any text. Interesting...

At any rate, that's a nice piece. I have one but it's in pretty rough shape. I love the reverse on this issue.
  • Very nice
  • I really like their current coinage. I bought a 2006 set, with the square silver in the center of the set. Nothing numismatically special, probably...but I love the 100 yen with the cherry blossoms. Just a neat little inexpensive set to look at.
