WHAT a Game tonight! Playoff Hockey!

Right from the opening faceoff there was a playoff atmosphere in the Canadiens-Penguins game tonight. Sidney Crosby got buttended on the opening faceoff and that just set the tone for the most intense game I've seen so far this year. In the second period Souray got a 2-5-10 and game misconduct for pummeling Colby Armstrong after Armstrong tried to take Saku Koivu's head off with a good, hard, clean check. The Penguins got a power play goal and the Canadiens got a short hander, one of two they got on the night. There were over 75 shots and both goalies made spectacular saves several times. The Canadiens had several flurries (no pun intended, lol) during the game during which it seemed like they were on a powerplay even though it was full strength for both teams. Crosby had another great game, three assists I think. With less than a minute left Jordan Staal hit the crossbar and thought it was in......Then there was overtime....
Overtime included a two minute 3-on-3! Kovalev played the entire 5 minutes, I think....or at least it seemed that way....what a player! Then came the shootout......
This was one of those games you wish never ended. The shootout, as always, was very exciting. Kovalev scored with a sick move and left Fleury swimming on his belly...Malkin made a similar, but not as slick, move to beat Aebischer to win the game (Christenson had also scored for the Pens).
Best of all, besides two of my favorite teams playing each other........Rematch this Sunday (Feb 4th) afternoon! Hard to imagine the rematch being as exciting as this game but I can always hope.

<< <i>I think it sucks when a great game has to end with a shoot-out. >>
I know what you're saying, but what's the alternative? I thought it sucked even worse when a great game ended in a tie, and playing unlimited 20 minute overtimes just is not going to happen during the regular season. Plus, the Stars have won almost every shootout they've ever been in, so I have another reason to think they're not so bad.

With the exception of football, most sports seem to be boring in mid-season. Baseball is the worst... When you play 80+ games in any sport, it gets boring at some point until the playoff stretch. The shootout is much better (IMO)than the OT's and then a tie. The shootout is also more entertaining by far (IMO) than an extra 6 innings of baseball or unlimited OT's in basketball.
