Production Numbers

Anyone actually have an educated guess as to what they production numbers were on older cards.

(50's vs 60's vs 70's vs 80's). I guess the safe assumption would be that Topps produced more cards every year, but in your opinion, are there some years that more product seems to be out there?

For example, I seem to see more 1968 Baseball PSA 10's than I do the surrounding years. In Football, 1977 cards have always seemed tougher to find than the 73-76 cards.

  • The only thing I can offer is that it's generally accepted that O-Pee-Chee produced only between 5% and 10% of the total Topps production number.

  • I think production figures for the 50's and 60's sets is irrelevant because more than half of those have been destroyed or thrown away. The late 1980's has by far the highest production figures of any era.

    Without a doubt.

  • I guess this was more for some of the 'old timers' that do a lot of vintage. Since the 'assumption' seems to be that production increased every year, are there some years that seem 'out of whack' - much more/less product around than surrounding years?

(Not talking about anything made in the last 20-25 years.)

fiveniner brought up a good point about the older stuff (50's, 60's) that much of was destroyed, thrown out by 'mom', etc. - but that should have happened with a good percentage of product from all of those years.
