Is it possible to refund only part of a paypal payment?

I sent a couple things that cost much less than I charged and I wanted to give back a couple dollars (I know, I'm a geek).

I believe you can do a partial refund, but don't ask me how!image

I seem to recall doing something like that about a year ago.

  • I did just that with a UK buyer this week. His postage was only half of what the auction stated, so I reversed him the money by Paypal.

This way you get charged extra fees.

If you go to the details of the payment, there is a link at the bottom of the page "refund payment". You click on it and you can partially or fully refund a payment, in which case the appropriate fees are also returned. The Refund Payment option is only available for 60 days after the payment was sent.

Well that was entirely too easy! I'd seen the link, but didn't stop to think it would cover a partial refund!

It was too late to send a coin, I didn't realize the cost until after the envelope was closed image.

    Thanks!!

  • Good for you! I've done that before. The info provided above (and copied below) worked just fine for me.

I've had people give me a refund on shipping using PayPal or they'll stick a couple of dollar bills in the package.

Expanding what Dimitri said, if you refund via the Send Money link, it is bad on several levels:

    1. PayPal ends up double-dipping on a transaction (or portion thereof) that never took place. When you refund using the Refund link, the pro-rated porttion of the fees you paid on the payment to begin with are reversed.

    2. When you refund using Send Money, the buyer ends up having to pay fees to receive the refund, which isn't right. Using the Refund link does NOT cause the buyer to pay fees on the refund. You're effectively "undoing" a payment or a portion of one.
