"Ancient" Coin ID

I have no clue what this might be. Someone suggested Byzantine? It's in a 2x2 marked "Ancient- From about the time of Christ" I'm going to try to post the pics here. Hopefully it will work...

Your pics worked, but don't give much idea of the scale. It would have been nice if you'd put a regular cent or dime in the picture for comparison.

I suppose it could be Byzantine, though it looks like it could be late Roman Empire, as well.

I believe it is quite a few centuries newer than "the time of Christ", though it is indeed an ancient bronze coin, at least a millennium old (but probably NOT two millennia old).

It looks like one of the small Roman copper coins made by Constantine or his descendants.

Which would make it at least 300 years after Christ.

  • It's the size of a dime, almost exactly.

Constantine and his boys made them that size.

The coin is so worn that it is hard to see the inscriptions.

It is a late Roman AE3. It looks like Julian the Apostate, but the inscriptions are not very clear so I could very well br wrong.
