Roosevelt Mintmarks. Trumpet tailed? Knob tailed?

Does anyone know of an online reference that shows what is what with these?

Just when I think I understand the difference, something else comes along that casts doubt on my interpretation.

For example, on p.60 of the Feb 5 Coin World, Potter has a pic of a 46-S mm that he is calling knob tailed... but that is what I considered a trumpet tail!

I for one would really like to collect these varieties of DDO's, DDR's, pointed and Blunt 9's, FS #'s, etc...

    That would be really neat.

    Great link, Thanks

  • Thanks mucho Cameonut.

Now I see my confusion was all Walter Breen's fault! (In addition to the fact that I was focusing on the bottom serifs, when the distinction is for the top serif.)

Is the knob tailed always located out of place like the picture shows?
    Dan
  • If by "out of place" you mean the placement of the mm in relation to the torch (in this case, lower than the trumpet tail pictured)?...

    No. The punches fall wherever.
