1991 Donruss Question

I know these cards are not worth anything in this set, but this is the year the Elites came out.
So my question is this what kind of boxes WAX or Rack or Cello Series one or Two where the elites sold in?
Thinking of buying some just for the fun of finding these little treasures. Hope someone can help me with this question.

Thanks,
Joe

  • Joe-

I think it was in everything. But it was the type of overproduction whereby if you found a single example in a case, you would be lucky.
  • I'd like to know also. I recall getting one Elite card out of all the packs I ripped back then...are the Elites worth anything?
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

They were really tough out of packs. Maybe one in every two or three 20 box cases...
I am buying and trading for RC's of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Bob Cousy!

  • The Reason why I want to get them from the packs is both 91 elite cards I've bought off Ebay have been NM at best and rarely come up graded. I'm thinking if i get them straight from the pack I have a good chance getting them Mint. Besides I think it would be fun to put together a perfect mint Raw set to display in an album. I've watched on ebay for a few months and 20 box case went for around $92. You can also buy a 1991 Donruss Baseball Unopened Series 1 Rack Case off BBCE for $30 + shipping but I wasn't sure they came i rack packs. Also wasn't sure which ones were include in series one all of them or not. What did the Auto Sandberg and the Ledgend Ryan elite come in? I dont know enough to make and educated buy on them. Thats why I love these boards. The best in the BIZ are here. Thank you all so far for your help.

Someone told me once that they average 1 per 20 box wax case. Those are cool cards. I think they will always be sought after.

They are often damaged a bit right out of the pack...

  • Yeah gregmo thats what I hear. On of my buddies said the Howard Johnson he pulled had to dinged up corners. I just know my Edgar Martinez I pulled many moons ago was in perfect shape but b/c of me being just 13 when I pulled it it shows minor where. Man their is a ton of cards I should have taken better car of. lol oh well they have always been fun. Thats why I love buying these old over produced sets brings back the memories. Thats why I'm still working on my 88 Donruss first cards I ever bought. Waiting for the set building special that will never happen to subit my perfect raw set. LOL

  • here was just a taught that passed through my mind what if someone was to pull the Ryan legend #1 of 7500 or the Sandberg Auto #1 0f 5000 and it graded a 9 or 10.
Talk about hitting gold in an unlikely pipe dream. LOL

Any know what something like that would fetch if sold?

Joe -- I'm not sure if it would be a huge multiple for the 9 or 10. Certainly a premium -- but there are a number of issues where the value is in the relative rarity of the card itself, and less so on the condition. I think the Ryan and Sandberg are examples of that -- especially when they should not be too uncommon to find in 7/8 grade.

Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards 2007
  • If I remember correctly, Ryan was first series and Sanberg was 2nd series been a long time so I might be wrong. Do remember that they were tough 1 per case two if you were real lucky. Also in racks and cellos but the odds were still the same if it was a 72 ct rack case 1 elite in about 3 cases, cellos if i remember right they were 16 boxes per case about 1 or 2 elites per case. image
  • The standard catalog is the SCD version of a Beckett only very very expanded. Most Barnes & Nobles, Bookstar, etc. will carry them.

  • im not sure how the 91's worked but 92 only had those foil "wax" packs if im not mistaken - also i beleive that the henderson legends and ripken autos where split between the 2 series in 92

  • 1991 Donruss were still the old school wax 1992 Donruss packs were mylar.
    the 1991's are
    1 Barry Bonds
    2 George Brett
    3 Jose Canseco
    4 Andre Dawson
    5 Doug Drabek
    6 Cecil Fielder
    7 Rickey Henderson
    8 Matt Williams
THose eight are numbered to 10,000

    Legend Series
    Nolan Ryan numbered to 7500

    Signature Series
    Ryne Sandberg numbered to 5,000

the 1991 Elites were inserted into first and second series wax packs.
  • I have a bit of experience busting 1989-1991 Donruss in search of cards "worthy" of submitting to PSA. Let me tell ya, it's not easy to pull 9's and 10's out of packs. Whether due to their cutting process or packaging process, cards very often already have soft corners right out of the pack... and centering is often a problem too.

That goes for inserts as well as base. I pulled a Rickey Henderson elite back in the day that what I can best describe as rounded corners.

Their quality improved in the following years when they switched away from wax and improved card stock and printing... but that didn't totally fix the problems. I can't tell you how many 1994 Nolan Ryans I had to go through before I got one that I thought would rate a 9 or 10 (it graded a 9).
Nolan Ryan & Edgar Martinez are my favorite players...

  • The Donruss Elites always sell when graded! But, man, nearly every raw one I've seen has its surface and corners suck all the way 'round the rectangle.

Besides for a REAL challenge you guys should try looking for the VARIATION errors on the front. Blue everywhere.

Good luck, and if you find the error Mcgwire which states that his position is "Base" and not "first base" on the back ....let me know!!
