Can you say undergraded? 1916-D Dime

fcloudfcloud Posts: 12,133 ✭✭✭✭
No it is not my coin, and no I don't know the seller, but check how solid this coin is for an AG03.

This has got to be the best AG03 1916-D Dime I have ever seen!

By wear, yeah, but look at the peckery tinks at front of face.

the obverse is a solid good, however, the letters are worn into the rim on the reverse, limiting it to an AG grade. definitely solid for the grade, but most likely would not upgrade. IMO

VG obverse-G reverse,IMO, after checking with my ANA grading guide. To make F, mercury dime rims, front and back, need to be complete. Obverse details are not quite there for F, there should be some more feather details to be seen in Liberty's wing to make fine grade even though the obverse rim is complete on the subject coin.

The marks on the front, the peckery tinks, if you will, are not at all distracting, in my opinion.PCGS wouldn't give this coin AG-03 for this reason. I think it is an excellent candidate for upgrade to at least G-04, and has a chance for G-06.

If I were in the market for one of these, based on the images, I wouldn't hesitate to pay "good" money for it.It's guaranteed to be authentic...

and was probably graded near the end of a long day at PCGS.

Here are some images of 1916-D dimes I've had or have.
The top coin is an AG03 (PCGS)
The middle coin was purchased as G06 (ANACS), and upgraded to VG08 (PCGS)
The bottom is AU--don't use that one for comparison.

Too much reverse rim wear to be a G. Definitely AG. Back in the day they would call it a VG/AG. Bust it out and send it in to ANACS if you want it to be a G.
...and BTW...the seller is on crack.

There is often a reason for things like this, that will not be apparent without the coin in hand. Yes, it certainly could be undergraded -- but it could also have old cleaning hairlines or a nasty rim bonk or any of a variety of other demerits that resulted in a net grade. Some time back I sold one in PCGS F12 that had in every way the detail of a Fine 15 -- in fact, as nice as some of the VF20's you see, fully defined diagonal bands around the fasces, etc. -- but that on close inspection had evidence of old, light cleaning. It was not a bad coin, but Fine was the right grade for it.

Not necessarily what's up with this one, but something to consider. Proceed with caution ...

That gouge in front of miss liberty's lips is aweful. If it wasn't a '16-D, it would probably have bodybagged, IMHO.

That gouge is very tiny. Check out what I'm seeing as a comparable-in-size gouge near Liberty's nose on the PCGS graded VG08 in the group of pictures posted by fcloud.

For lower grade coins (below EF) things like tiny gouges only come into play at the grading companies when they are numerous and/or in a place or places where they serve to substantially distract. Places for a gouge or gouges that would substantially distract would be either on or around the date and/or on or around the mintmark on a '16 D dime.

Since the '16 D that is the subject of this thread has no such gouge or gouges can you agree with me that PCGS might not see "that gouge in front of miss liberty's lips" as being not that aweful...awful?

If a picture wasn't going very well I'd put a puppy dog in it, always a mongrel, you know, never one of the full bred puppies. And then I'd put a bandage on its foot... I liked it when I did it, but now I'm sick of it.

PCGS might see "that gouge in front of miss liberty's lip" as being not that aweful...awful" is what I meant to say.

I think it would go G04. There is a good bit of change from an 03 to an 04.

I don't think the coin will ever make it to a holder higher, but who is to say on a good day. The rims on the 06/08 I posted are full, hard to see but full.

I don't care for it at all.

Was her face on fire and did someone use an icepick to put it out? Looks like it might be pitted down around the date and under the motto as well.

While it may be borderline AG/G, it's certainly not what I would deem PQ.

It is in fine condition, for the grade. He's just wrong about the FINE grade and...

    never mind.
