A Guy Walks Into The Shop Today...Great Story..

...and tells me his Grandmother has an 1870-CC Half eagle. I said are you sure of the date and mint mark? He said he was positive, he hadn't seen the coin in a couple years but said it was definitely an 1870-CC and looks brand new. Now, the guy is not a collector so I doubt his grading abilities are that great but even if the coin is EF or something this would be one heck of a find.

He said he had been trying to find one on-line, to get an idea of the value, but wasn't able to see any. I told him I doubted he would due to the rarity.

His Grandma is 90+ and has had the coin in her lock box for over 70 years.

I've had this type of thing happen numerous times in the past only to find out the coin was fake, altered or just misrepresented in someway. So, I'm holding back some of my excitement but maybe this time it will be different. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out.

I told him I would love an opportunity to buy the coin (or at least see it) and even if she didn't want to sell it, the coin needed the authenticated and/or appraised and possibly certified just so they had some idea of value so someone doesn't take advantage of the old gal or the family.

When I told him what it could possibly be worth his face looked like one of those people on the antiques road show.image

I think I may enjoy owning a shopimage

I sincerely hope this pans out and you at least get a chance to see it, but my gut feeling is that you'll never see the guy again.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

A true shop owner would have said "It might be worth $1000, but in the condition yours is, I'll give you $400!!"
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

Great story, Elwood! Hopefully when he returns, he will bring the companion 1870-CC double eagle! image

the twist is that if the coin turns out to be genuine and it's as MS64+ "brand new" as the guy thinks it is, will you be able to afford it??? this could be a case where the PR involved with helping someone will be worth more than the amount of money, especially since you're just starting with the brick and mortar.

I doubt that one exists. My pop numbers are getting old but I don't believe one has been graded above MS-62. Doesn't mean there isn't one or more out there in collections however.

If it did exist, it would be a 6 figure coin.

I sure hope you continue these "Look what walked in today" threads, I love 'em........

Make me wonder what the amount of rarities(or just some real good, unmessed with stuff) is still out there for the common man..

    Keep 'em comin'................wes

That is good to hear, I have seen too many B&Ms just lowball the heck out of stuff. Then laugh about it when the sellers leave.
