Why not just have a currency revalueation say 10-1? This would leave the current system in tact with the new coins having a value of 10 times the value they have now. One new dollar would be worth 10 old dollars. a new cent would equal 10 old cent, etc. Eliminating the need for any change in size or denominations. Prices on everything would correspond to the new currency. gas would be 20 cents a gallon. JMHO. Bob

Paying cash for gas is just too much of a PITA these days. And checks? Wow... that's sooo 20th century. You must be a joy to stand behind at the checkout line.
Gas is always the credit card. I used to use cash for smaller purchases, but nowadays they've made it so easy to pay with plastic that I almost always do. If I stop off at the supermarket to pick up a half gallon of milk, you can bet I'll use plastic. My card pays me back 1% of everything, and I never carry a balance, so it just makes fiscal sense to do it this way.

After reading this, some of these ideas are good, some are not. Here is what I think of this.
Eliminate the .01, but put a REAL copper penny in the mint sets. Disagree with eliminating the cent. Circulation versions should be made out of copper plated aluminum. Agree on the Mint and Proof set version being made of copper.
Nickel-plated steel .05 Disagree with nickel plating. Copper plating would be better, and should be downsized some but still bigger than the current cent.
Current .10 & Current .25 Disagree with the current composition and size. Both coins should be made of brass, nickel-brass, or brass-plated steel. 10c needs a slight upsizing and 25c needs downsizing.
Eliminate the .50 for circulation, but leave it in mint sets Highly Disagree - can be made useful if such uses same composition as Sacagawea & Presidential $1 but smaller with a distinctive edge (either interrupted (part reeded, part plain) or multisided like Canada $1
Current $1 Agree, but should also have a lettered edge like the Presidential Dollars

Highly Agree - with this addition - DCARRS design should be the standard design, and also, the denomination should be used for circulating commemoratives. For such coin to work, it must have a distinctive edge and also the ring and plug must truly contrast.
Switch to polymer notes for $5 to $100 Agree, but the $5 should be made into either a bimetal or trimetal coin instead, and a $200 denomination should be added. All notes should use very bright and unmistakable colors for easy identification and should have OVD's, color shifting inks, holograms, and other advanced anti-counterfeiting features.

$5 and up in bills (I wouldn't want a $5 coin as I tend to take change and just throw it wherever)
I would like to have a clear size difference in the coins.. perhaps keep the dime the same as it is now in size and denomination, but make a nickel sized coin that is worth 50 cents and quarter sized coin that is worth a dollar.
Phase out the large 50 cent coin or better yet, mint it as a $5 coin alongside $5 bills.
Will it ever happen? I doubt it. >>
Pretty much the same as my proposal and thus I agree. Getting people to be rational and let go of the quarter will be difficult but is really a key component of the minor coinage. It needs to be at 1/10 of a dollar resolution and would be simple enough.

That's what third world countries do. Not the United States. Doing that would be significantly more difficult than just killing the penny and nickel.
