Who actually purchased something from shop at home and what was it?

Don West had me a few times with the phone in my hands and then my instinct stopped me(at the time I was a dealer and that jackleg had me wanting to buy his cards). He was very exciting and I am sure raked in millions for Ken Goldin? I believe that was his name!

Any takers out there- Any takers ever get anything good from Ken and Don?

  • I had the phone in my hands a few times too, but I also had ebay back then so I would do a quick search and realize I was falling for the hype. Sometimes you had to look closely at the screen because his gem mint graded rookie blowouts were deceptive--they were in "MINT" holders and "PRO" and "USA" holders, rather than PSA. The entertainment value of Don's show was such that I think I wouldn't feel bad about spending a few hundred on flexpay--sort of like pay per view.

I had purchased a few autograph baseballs. This was about 13 years ago. I had individuals of Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Greg Maddux, and Barry Bonds. A couple others; I can't remember. They all came with COAs from Scoreboard and had shrink wrap on them to protect them. Overall, I wish I still had them with ball grading going on now. They were super clean. Oh well.
  • What is this shop at home stuff I keep hearing about? Is it worth watching and how to I get it?

I bought a Reggie Jackson autographed ball sometime around 1988. I think it was $19.99

I like some others "almost" pulled the trigger on some items, but I never bought any. Yes, it was entertaining though at times watching these scam artists at work.

The one I came closest to was for a few months they were offering a vintage lot, sort of like the ebay scams of today whereby they picture Mantles and all kinds of key cards and for $5 you would receive an "unsearched" group of cards. And of course the cards are anything but unsearched.

For a brief time I wondered whether or not this could be legit because perhaps Shop-At-Home would monitor the thing to make sure all these key cards were indeed inserted into the random packs, so that yes a Mantle could really be gotten in some of the packs.

But then I noticed that week after week they would show the same cards over and over again! Certainly at least these cards weren't being inserted into the random packs. Scammers are not always smart.

The Joe DiMaggio Albums (big 2-book series on Joe D.) had me thisclose to buying them. I literally called and was on hold for a couple of minutes when I realized it was probably overpriced if he had them on his show.

I still regret not buying a Babe Ruth check when I seriously considered that on Shop at Home. It's only tripled in value from their jacked-up prices at the time.

Those "check" autographs weren't in high demand back then, and even with some key players those checks weren't hardly worth anything on the open market. Yes, that has changed since then for a variety of reasons.

I did, well sorta. (my wife) A 1959 proof set for a few dollars more then book. However the set is in gem condition, no spots etc.

    I guess we lucked out.

    paid 32.99 for a 27.00 proof set.

    Steve

    Good for you.
  • I bought the 'Blue Chip special' back in '99. Cost $79.00. Got a bunch of nothing cards, with some interesting throwins--3 Auravision records from 64 of Drysdale, Koufax and Mantle, a packet of Randy Johnson rookies and a Ripken Fleer rookie. Not worth the $79.00 at the time, but it was a good grab bag...
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

  • I used to come home drunk from the bar most night during college, and good old Don would be on late night Tv hawking cards. To amuse ourselves (not too difficult) we would call and mess with the operator, placing thses huge orders before we'd start laughing or made some dumb joke or whatever. They asked for your zip code first, and eventually it got to the point where we'd give the zip and automatically get hung up on - if anyone had wanted to place a legit order at 3 AM, in the late 90's, form Brockport NY I guess they were just SOL. image
  • The only purchase I made was when we were first setting up a card vending machine. I bought one of their box lots in hopes to counter my premium pack star cards with the lower end stuff. I was expecting proset etc, but they sent multiples of that college crap. I think there were only 2 or 3 main stream boxes the rest were college. I think it was proset hockey, proset football, and pacific football then duplicates of 3 college boxes and another single one. I sent it back for a refund, because I wasn't going to stick any of that crap in there. Proset and Pacific were fine but that college garbage was one of those items they loved to push.

I will admit, I was tempted to try their 200 baseball wax pack assortment (didn't think it was worth $100 just for random packs though), but I bet I would've most likely gotten mostly late 80s/early 90s junk wax, maybe one or two good packs at most, and perhaps several small obscure packs like the kind Denny's holograms came in or something.

I saw their show a couple days ago and they were selling a 1987 Fleer Glossy set for $160, when it actually books for $120. And then they were selling 1989, 1990, and 1991 with the "hi-number" sets included as if they were the equilvant of the Topps Traded/Fleer Update sets; they're already included in the standard factory sets!! And probably not worth $200 either. And I loved how they were going on and on about how you can't ask UD to make any more 1989 cards and the supply of factory sets will only diminish as time goes on. That may be true, but there's still plenty to go around nevertheless.

In 93 when I was a little high school Freshman I bought some Classic LP set that had Webber, Penny Hardaway, Mashburn and the top 10 from that class. It was supposed to be a big deal because it had them playing for the wrong teams or something. I think I paid $60 for it and when I realized it was only going to go down I think I sold it for $40. No idea what it is worth today.

They had a PSA 10 Reggie Bush Score Rookie and a BGS 9.5 Bush Topps #5 Jersey for $39.99
I thought that was very low for S at H, I had their price figured at $99.99 for the pair or maybe $99 each.
  • Are these the two tools that are on late night TV?

Saw them trying to peddle glossy Ripken reprints along with uncut sheets.

I vomited, then flipped to the Oxygen channel. Or maybe it was LOGO.

Anyone want to start a "vintage" at home shopping program?

That might be cool. And imagine the audience.

Thanks for the post - Yea that's what I was referring to...I always wondered what people really got. Sounds like a Ken Goldin "special" with a bunch of nothing cards - but at least you didn't seem too unhappy with it calling it a "good grab bag"
  • They were the best company out there for False Advertising. When I had purchased my unopened box lot they only showed products from Baseball, Football, and Basketball. I wasn't expecting any of the higher end stuff they were showing, but when you get Hockey and College boxes that weren't mentioned or shown as being possible insertions, that's where the scam comes into play. Total waste of time and money. Total A**holes and they could care less, seeing they don't lose anything and you lose shipping costs both ways.

I remember a vintage shop at home type show. It looked like it should have been on cable access (filming out of your basement.....), but I think it was on some obscure cable channel. Guy had a wood stand and would just put all sorts of cards up, lots of years and variety. You actually saw what you were getting. I'm thinking this was around the 1994ish????

The one thing I wanted to add was that it was called 'the blue chip special'. It was labeled 'the blue chip special'. When you peeled the label off the box, it was labeled 'rookies galore' or some crap like that.

When you go in with very low expectations (as I did when I called S at H) you can't be disappointed. Besides, the records were neat and display pretty nicely.

Edit to add: Oh yeah, the kicker to it all is they proclaimed the book value was $XXX--always more than you were paying. They determined book value by throwing in some photocopied sell lists from some dealer with the dates/addresses/names blacked out. Thought that was pretty funny.
