Is this a Laminated Planchet error or...???
The magnified image resembles a laminated planchet error as evidenced by the layers peeling back between the M and E in America on this 1937 Mercury dime. The question is did this damage occur at the mint or after it was in circulation?
I took a picture of the edge of the coin at the 2:30 position corresponding the break between the A and E in America. The third image is the opposite axis of the coin's edge at the 8:30 position. The rim varies in thickness and is thickest at the polar axes along the 2:30 to 6:30 position of the disc and is thinest at the disc areas furtherst away from the axis.
There is also one other peculiar feature. On Liberty's neck is a small circular protrusion. On the reverse there is a depression just opposite about the size of a small pin head between the bundle and the fasces on the reverse. I suspect this damage may have occured after minting. But I am not positive. Any professional opion as to what may have caused the layered separation?
Thanks.
