Revealed: how ebay sellers fix auctions

The new practice of concealing bidders' identities, causing more shilling? Nah! Can't be true!

They don't mention coins, but antiquities are pretty close to home...

    Shill bidding is and probably always has been common at most large auction venues.

    I saw it cleverly and sometimes clumsily carried out at automobile auctions for years.

    The best defense is education. I actually don't mind a shill bid if it starts an item out at a price below where it should be. The shill bidding I can't abide is when the price is at a fair level and the shilling occurs-that's patently unfair...

    It may make the users safer from fake second chance offers, but it makes them much more at risk from shill bidding, and the only partial answer to that is snipe bidding.

    It also makes a sellers reputation all the more valuable!
