Toned Roosies - Questions

I bought some rolls with end-toned coins, and now I am motivated to take them out of the rolls for sale and/or posterity.

1) If I remove some toned end coins from OBW rolls, will regular cardboard 2x2's be ok for their initial storage?

2) Should I document each end toner with a photo of it still in the roll before I remove it? When I examine the coins with a loupe, I don't see how anyone could artificially duplicate what I see, so should I worry about documentation?

3) I have several rainbow colored coins that look good, but do people also like the slate-grey colored ones that still have just a little bit of purples, reds and greens - or are they too far gone?

4) How tightly bound to the coin is the toning layer?

Any insights will be much appreciated.

I travel in my job, and I have quite a few of these rolls, so the "show and tell" might take awhile. I seem to be having trouble with Microsoft's Paint program, because some of my photos won't shrink below 50K, and it looks like I will have to get a good imaging software program. Any suggestions for a decent program that's not outrageously expensive? I'd like to produce some photos for the Board that would show the details, because the colors are intriguing at 10X magnification.

Another question - if there is fiberous debris on the surface, can I lightly brush it off?

You might want to sign up for a free web image hosting service. Upload your images, and then paste that url into the image box you get when you push the fourth option from the left in the reply form. Looks like a little picture.

Your image will be sized correctly for the forum.

Some do what you propose and host them here, they'll have to tell you how when they regain consciousness.

Don't touch the surface with anything, just blow it off.

The big premiums are for big color. The darker toned coins are appreciated by some sophisticated collectors, but if they don't have great luster they often are not appreciated.

Digital photos can be sized by cropping the photo so only the coin shows. At that point one can compress the photo. Many programs offer an option named something like "save for web". You might get to choose a format (.JPG is most often used) and a compression ratio (less than %70 down to %40 or so seems to work for me).

I would certainly document the coin by photographing it in the roll. 2x2s are just fine for storage. Toning is part of the coin. Natural toning is the result of the metal of the coin interacting with its environment. So toning is very tightly bound to the coin because it is part of the coin.

2x2's for intial storage would be good.

I dont see a downside to a picture of you opening the roll, but there will be those who will always
raise the question, He load the roll first and took the picture to try to convince us the toners at
the end are true End Roll Toners.

Some slate coins look great with a nice mixture of other color, some look mottled. I would have to see them.

What ever you do dont rub those coins, you might just make a beauty an uggly duckling real quick.

Thanks for the tips. I plan to provide the Board with an ongoing barrage of toned Roosie images after I get my act together.

Looking at them with the naked eye, and with my loupe, I can understand why people might like them. I like them too, but I really bought the rolls simply to keep as silver bullion. Now, I am turning into a toned roll bullion hog! (The best-laid plans of mice and men 'oft go astray.)

On many of these Roosies, the color development is like a patchwork quilt of all different colors. The slate gray ones still have some subdued colors too, and the slate is fairly uniform on many of those, so they look like colored gun metal, rather than silver. There are a few golden-colored ones, where the patchwork is yellow, some orange. I have rolls with toners on both ends, and rolls with cardboard on one end.

I won't lightly brush the fiber debris from them, since the advice was not to do that. I will go with 2x2's. If I can get some of the new pics reduced today, I will post them. Regards, jmski52

I'm newbie-ing my way through this, too, with the help here and at coppercoins. I'm using the photobucket site ( recommended here ) to get pics into an acceptable file size. I have some Franklins I'll be posting for comment shortly.
