PSA Graders Mistakenly Designating MANTLE Exhibit Cards (1947-66)

Someone on PSA's staff is making a serious mistake in designating the different versions of MICKEY MANTLE EXHIBIT Cards 1947-66 and it is going to cost PSA a lot of money on their guarantee as well as hurting people like me who have the rarer versions.

There are four kinds of MICKEY MANTLE Exhibit (47-66) cards: (1) the rare PORTRAIT variety; (2) the less rare BATTING (full body) in PINSTRIPES variety; (3) the somewhat scarce BATTING (bust only), NO PINSTRIPES , FIRST NAME NOT OUTLINED IN WHITE variety; and (4) the common BATTING (bust only), NO PINSTRIPES , FIRST NAME OUTLINED IN WHITE variety

I recently submitted the 4th --or most common-- variety only to have it designated as EXTREMELY RARE PORTRAIT version!!!! I noticed a similar mistake on an item being sold on EBAY. See EBAY item # 140071921654. That card is the same common Batting No pinstripes first name outlined in white variety again designated as the rare "PORTRAIT" version.

This means someone in PSA is designating the common 3rd and 4th varieties as the Extremely rare PORTRAIT variety!!!!

This is also skewing the population charts and making the very rare PORTRAIT variety appear more common than it is and driving down its value. PLEASE STOP THIS GUY BEFORE HE STRIKES AGAIN

    You just did.

Call PSA on Monday, and they will solve the problem.

  • I think I finally got this picture thing to work but I can't get the order just right . Attached but likely not in htis order are (1) a picture of the REAL and rare Mantle Exhibts card PORTRAIT variety with no bats anywhere in the picture --just Mick; the (2) a picture of the Batting no pinstripes version wrongly designated as "Portrait" by PSA and finally (3) that same Batting vno pinstripes ersion properly designated by SGA

No reason to POOF this if someone is making a costly mistake. I think the best way to handle the situation is to call PSA ( and speak with someone of authority) or e-mail Joe.

They do it with lots of vintage cards - and they don't consider it to fall within their guarantee.

I recently bought a Sweet Caporal P2 Pin PSA 6 Miller Huggins Small Letters that was actually a Dots Miller (I bought it from a dealer who didn't give scans on his website). Lo and behold, 2 weeks ago another misidentified Miller sells on eBay - although there the seller disclosed the PSA screwup.

If the pop report in the Set Registry is accurate, PSA has misidentified more PSA 6 Dots Miller from that set (2 that I know of) than it has identified correctly (1). image

  • I've had the same gripe wih another set of cards. The cards all have an inaccurate title added to the slab. I've sent some e-mails but am yet to hear anything official. It stinks because I'd like to have my cards graded but will not if they all have wrong information on the slabs.

The key with all of this in my opinion is more accountability among all of the grading companies and even more accountability with online auction sites. It's an amazing thing happening on ebay with the Ripken counterfeits that are allowed to be sold. Someone sees a counterfeit in "Gem Mint" and drive the price up over $900. Then when an authentic copy comes up and is in EX-NM condition the price collapses due to the sell of a card that someone thinks is authentic.

The labeling errors have become very common of late, and they will explain that these cards have simply been mislabeled.

I understand how you feel, as I have seen it done with some Topps Venezuelan issues that I collect. There is currently a 1959 Spahn in a PSA 6 Venezuelan holder which is nothing more than an EX-MT 59 US Topps Spahn. But labeled as a Venezuelan, it's one of only 2 PSA 6's ever graded from the set, the highest grade ever assigned to one. Same deal with a 1960 Master & Mentor card - they have it in a PSA 6 holder, but it's really a US Topps card. Again, one of only two PSA 6's from the entire set ever graded, and none higher in the whole set.

Both of these cards have sold on eBay within the past year at huge premiums when in fact, they're worth no more than a couple bucks each.
