1896 S Barber Quarter Question on mintage :

I recently bought a nice PCGS VG10 example and was checking David Lawrence`s 2nd edition . On page 120 he lists the mintage @ 1,888,039 , which is higher then some 30 other dates within the series .
Is this the correct mintage ? If so , what happened to make this `96 S a key date when dozens of others have lower mintages ?

It looks like it is only a key date in MS. Many circs and very few uncs ... like the 84-S Morgan.

According to an inexpensive book sold by Dave Bowers "US Dimes, Quarters and Half Dollars" page 96. In 1896 very few people were interested in saving them he too states, as well as, the Red Book 188, 039 minted. He estimates that in high grades no more than 2 or 3 dozen were set aside for collecting at the time of issue.

Mintages are only part of the story when it comes to coins. His little book explains in detail the 01S, 13S and 96S issues how the O1S is elusive in lower grades,but the 96 S is about as rare in high grades. Well, you get the idea.

Misprint. On page 40 of the same book it is listed as 188,039.

Well thanks to all ! 188k vs 1.8 mil ; that decimal place can make a huge diffrence !
a misprint it seems got me sidetracked .
