Newbie, just stopping by to say hello

Hello all,

Well I am new to the boards but have been lurking here for months. I have learned a great deal from the discussions and interactions that have taken place.

A little about me.... Collected in the late 70's early 80's..My dad and I actually had a card shop in our basement that the neighborhood kids would frequent... Got out of the hoppy around 1983. image (No I did not have any insider infoimage ) I kept a number of cards and had them in storage, last summer got the bug again and started back collecting cards, and have been going crazy spending money every since.

I am diffently a vintage man, anything pre-1980 except for the bird basic set.

Presently working on:

1956 Baseball PSA 6-7 set
1954 Baseball PSA 4-5 set
1971 Basketball PSA 7-8 set.
Larry Bird basic set PSA 9+

I had a grading question for everyone.

How does PSA handle grading of cards that you request there not be any qualifiers. I.E.

what would a PSA 8oc come back graded as if you asked of no qualifiers, or if you tried to cross it over to say SGC.

thanks

They would fit that card into the first grade that the centereing was acceptable for. I guess it depends on how OC it is. SGC seems to be a little less harsh on centering.

    Hi Biff

    First - Welcome!

It must have been cool to sell stuff out of the basement with your dad. When I was in high school, I worked in my dad's auction in the summertime - it travelled - I had a great time.

Now the question - as was said - importantly - HOW OC is the card?

Worst case scenario - let's say ya got a card with the gloss and corners of an 8 but it's way, way OC - say 90-10:

Ya would wind up with a nice 8OC holder.

But - if ya ask for no qualifiers - ya wind up with a PSA3!!!

PSA 3 - Centering must be 90/10 or better on the front and back.

Whereas the PSA4 - Centering must be 85/15 or better on the front and 90/10 or better on the back.

The SGC question? I'm clueless - sorry.
    your friend

    Topps or Bowman?

Being a current '54 B collector, they are significantly less expensive yet have a fair share of HOFers (especially if you can nab the Williams image )

    Good luck image
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

Thanks Mike, that answers my question....

It was, we stopped when we moved to Florida in 1983. My dad sold off the collection and my brother and I got to keep a small amount of cards though. My big cards I kept was a 1960 Yaz rookie, and a 1968 ryan rookie. My brother got a 63 rose rookie.....

Hey stown, I thought about starting the Bowman, but decided on the topps b/c I just really liked how they look plus, 2 of my Must have cards are the Banks and Aaron rookies.

Actually I bought a 54 williams(raw)of of Ebay within the first week of getting back into the hobby..... I thought I got a good deal.... It was counterfiet..... So was a 64 mantle(raw) I bought.... Now, if it ain't slabbed then it ain't getting bought by me.
