Solid wholesome very scarce date. Congratulations!!

Here is a picture of one I believe to be authentic. I too am concerned about the authenticity of your example.

The 4 looks too close to the 8 for a 46

If it's an altered date?, looks like it would be from an 1845.

I would tell you something about your "1846" half dime, but I don't want to start another suicide thread. image

Boy you all are pretty good image

I thought I'd fool more than I did with this thread lol. The coin is indeed an altered date counterfeit 1846 half dime. I won the coin on the cheap on eBay just recently. The auction that rhedden linked is the auction I won. Very good detective work guys. image

I've always been intrigued by counterfeits and fakes and I couldn't pass up this opportunity to snatch one up. It will make a very nice curio addition to my seated half dime collection. Also, with the coin safely in my collection it assures that it will not be sold as a supposed legitmate 1846. This one is off the market.

Here is a close up photo of the date in which you can clearly see the tooling marks and begin to understand how the metal was moved to make the 6 on this coin. If I had to guess I'd say that the original coin was likely an 1845 but I will defer to Mr.HalfDime and his superior knowledge in the area. I'd put good money that Mr.HalfDime will be able to accurately attribute the coin to its true date and die marraige.

Clad, it's actually not a bad fake compared to some that are seen on eBay. When you want to buy a genuine one, let me know. image

Anyone else have an altered date 1846 to show pics of? I'd love to be able to compare the date of this one to another fake.
