What is the best online source to help detect counterfeit US Gold coins?

    The book called The Official Guide to Coin Grading and Counterfeit Detecting is a must. There are other sources of information, but ... the book covers many ways to determine fakes. Some are DIE/Tool marks, or just Weight and size. Get the book ...it's 20 bucks and worth it.

    I second Joe's input. The book is quite good at this. Also, if you pick up the ANA's Detection of Counterfeit and Altered Coins Correspondence Course or go to the course, that's also very helpful.

    Bill Fivaz authored a book on counterfeit gold coin detection which contains a lot of high quality photos of fake gold coins showing their diagnostics. Well worth getting if you are brave enough to buy raw gold.

    I have a pretty simple way.....
    Carry a strong magnet in your pocket when viewing raw gold at estate sales and auctions.
    I carry a broken off piece of a speaker magnet....If there is ANY attraction at all...I won't bid!!!!

    There are good books out there, but if you really want to learn authentication, you should take the ANA summer seminar course taught by JP Martin and Bob Campbell. I think you can probably sign up for it now...

    I hope you aren't being serious. Most fake gold coins have the proper fineness and weight of gold. I've never heard of a fake gold coin being made of steel so the magnet test is worthless for gold coins.
