Taking offers for 1988 Topps Cloth Experimental baseball cards

Hi..
To the best of my knowledge these cards were produced by Topps, but was a failed experiment that was never meant to be released to the public, but like many other collectibles these cards made their way into the hands of collectors. The complete set consists of 121 blank backed cards that look like the regular 1988 Topps cards, but the similarity ends there. The cards are printed on a material that looks and feels like TYVEK(that's the plastic that's wrapped around a newly constructed house before the vinyl siding goes up). The cards are very thin and flexible. To give you an idea of the thickness it would take three(3) 1988 Cloth cards stacked on top of each other to equal the thickness of a standard 1988 Topps baseball card. I have for sale the following cards. It's not a complete set as I have already sold some. I broke them down by teams for the team collectors out there. This is also a neat item if you collect Topps test issues. Most of the players in this set are commons. I will try and post scans of the stars that I have left this weekend.
Email me with questions or for high quality scans of particular card(s) and to talk about prices. I will answer all emails as quickly as possible.
List has been updated as to what cards are remaining on 2-19-2007.
Thanks...Donato

the whole sheet worth a lot more then one by one.

<< <i>Why would you cut up a nice full sheet of these? I would consider
the whole sheet worth a lot more then one by one. >>
It's not. There are VERY few people that would be interested in a complete sheet of those. This sort of thing is ideal to be cut apart and sold to player collectors, team collectors, and type set collectors. Check the want lists of individual player collectors, and you'll find the '88 Cloth cards almost every single time.
Good luck with your sales Donato!

Hi..
Most player or team collectors don't want to pay what a complete sheet may cost just to get the players they collect. When I mentioned having a sheet at card shows most people asked if I intended to cut it up as they were interested in the singles. I myself am a player collector. I collect Ryan and Rose, so for me I think the same way and am aways looking for singles of those guys and most times I don't want to buy a complete sheet of something just for one card. Especially if you don't have the storage room for it.

The only thing I question is, the origin of these pcs? Where exactly or how did
they reach the hobby? If you have any answers, I would love to know.
Thanks,
Tony

Hi Tony...
I'm glad you received your cards and are happy with them.
From what I have been told and read in an SCD article from July of 1997, these cards were produced by Topps, but were supposed to be discarded as they were a problem to produce and distribute. Basically a failed "experiment" on a new product or concept that Topps was trying to develop. Also, all the sheets I've seen say on them "SAMPLE ONLY NOT FOR SALE", in two locations, so we can assume that these sheets were not meant to be sold or cut up into cards and distributed at that time as they were still in the developemental stage of production. I think that someone saved these sheets from the scrap and from there they made their way out into the hobby. If anyone knows or has any more information on these sheets or cards please feel free to add your comments.
Thanks...Donato

<< <i>Is Bill Buckner in the cloth set? Also, does PSA grade them? >>
No, Bill Buckner is not in the set. PSA doesn't currently grade them, and I'd be surprised if they started. One of the large grading companies does, but I can't remember which.
