Is the 1965 Kennedy a clad coin?

Does the rim side show copper?

I have one that looks just like a 64 ms in the SMS pack. Not shiney like the 1966 or 1967.

What gives here? It is the only 65 set I have so I have no comparison.

1965 is 40% silver.

What you're seeing is a coin struck with abraded dies. That's more typical for 65 halves than is the prooflike look.

I think my big question is should there be any sign of a copper core on the edge?

Or is the 65 merely a copper silver mixture of metal?

The coin is thicker than the 66 and 67 years and shows no sign of copper like those years do?

It is a silver clad coin. 40% silver. Some do show a hint of copper on the edge of the coin.

Many of the SMS coins do not have prooflike surfaces. It is my understanding that as the SMS dies wore down they begin to give the coins a more business strike looking finish. I have some SMS coins that are indistiguishable from business strike coins. Hope this helps.

Somehow PCGS can tell the difference.

The outer edge of the sandwich usually looks dull grey, so it isn't uncommon to NOT see the copper. Sorry.

Question about the 1971 &72. I know that they are clad 0% silver, but why do so many of them have a finish that is similiar looking to a silver clad ? As far as I can tell it is only on those 2 years ?

Amigo, to me the 71-72 coins have a wider rim, slightly lower relief, and a slightly different color, but they are nicer than the redesigns that came afterwards. I'm unsure what you're seeing, except possibly the reflectivity of the clad surface being similar to the SMS coins struck from early dies.
