Question on card returned as "Miscut"

On my most recent submission I had a 1958 Allstar card returned which PSA would not holder and the sleeve PSA sends back had a notation of "Miscut". I thought that a miscut was a qualifier and that the card would receive a grade with a "MC" qualifier. There was also a notation of "N-8". I called customer service for clarification. I was told that PSA would not grade "hand-cut" cards (which I undestood) but I explained that this was not a hand cut card - this was a 1958 Topps Allstar card. They checked futher and said the N-8 meant it was an abnormal factory cut. Still don't understand why it wasn't graded with a "MC" designation. Can anyone shed any light on this? As always all of your comments are appreciated.

i had the same thing happen. maybe they are not grading with MC as a qualifier and they just return the cards. not for sure.

    Thanks,

N-8 is often given on cards where the cardboard itself is not rectangular because of a factory cut. The MC qualifier is given when a card is so off-center that some of the image or text is missing from the card BUT the cardboard itself measures the correct dimensions. Does that make any sense? It's hard to illustrate without examples and I don't have any on hand.

  • Sometimes PSA will return cards that are a bit smaller when cut at the factory and give you a free grade voucher. Just try resubmitting it with your next order to see if you can get it by depending on the severity of the size or cut....

i got these in some recent results:

1958 HIRES ROOT BEER 65 GENE BAKER NO TAB 5MC
1958 HIRES ROOT BEER 70 CURT BARCLAY NO TAB 6

i dont really remember what they looked like to be honest.. i knew they'd grade low because of corner wear, but i wont know what caused the MC until i get it back i guess..

on the miscut i received, the centering was fine front and back, i'm assuming it was not square and that's why they considered it miscut. i'll post a scan.

I got a card returned as miscut as well. The card looks perfectly normal, but when you compare it to other cards, its actually a bit wide.

My guess is that your card doesn't fit in the holder.

I am betting the card is not square enough, or not small enough to fit into a holder.

  • There was an issue a while back where a collector bought some unopened product from a reputable source (one of those gold mine finds), and the cards were all miscut so they were no longer the standard size. PSA rejected them as trimmed, but they WERE authentic and unalterred. So the people at Topps were consulted and asked if their machines ever had a run where cards came out mishapen, etc. In any event, I think PSA rejects all cards that don't measure the standard size. So if it's not square they won't grade it.
