A myth about SC$'s and the "Mirabela" nickel.

A couple forum members sent me stuff this past week and I managed to get pictures yesterday that I thought I'd post. Enjoy.

The first is a nice Liberty Bell Dollar, HK-24, sent by orie. Unlike many early issues and almost all of the Liberty Bell Dollars I've seen, this example isn't holed and should go a long way to dispell what I term a myth about these medals, that they were issued "holed for suspension" when struck. Perhaps that was an option that was made available to a purchaser or more likely there were jewelers who drilled these, but they weren't made with the hole as some assert. Just as the Centennial Celebration was a popular source of Love Tokens, it's logical to assume that jewelers sold chains and holed the medals. This medal exhibits nice color and a full strike which gives that gorgeous high relief we all want in coins!!
The second is the "Mirabela" 1982-P Jefferson Nickel, a very, very nice example of a tough date in the series. Matt wanted me to look at the coin and submit it to PCGS for him and the coin is an absolute gem, a clean MDS with minimal contacts, nice luster and great step detail which shows the top five steps clearly with no contacts or unstruck flaws. Considering the difficulty in locating this date in gem, fully struck condition, it should be nice eye candy for collectors of the series and also for those who can appreciate Modern Rarities, even if they are only conditionally rare. This coin has a particularly bright future ahead of it, and you can quote me on that in about 30 years!!!
