Bidder 1.....Bidder 2......Bidder 3.....

Who are they kidding? Are they protecting the Shills or the Buyer? This stinks.

  • I don't like it either... makes me feel like I'm being shilled even when I know I'm not???

A couple of my best deals were made with people who saw me bid high on one item or another. Then they spammed me, and I appreciate that when it's something I'm interested in, and not viagra image

Why is it sometimes I can see Bidder 1, 2, etc after the auction has ended,
and sometimes I CAN'T see it? Meaning I can still see all the IDs that have bid.
Seems like it works when it wants to?

Every change they make has to do with them making more money. They want to prevent auction lurkers from offering a like item they might have for sale to an non-winning bidder. They of course say it's for everyone's safety, which it is to a degree, but what they're really concerned with is people getting away with selling their item to a member and circumventing the fees. But this flawed new system seems like it would protect a shill bidder. Ebay pretends to care about fraud, but at the end of the day it's buyer beware and as long as they get their fees and commissions, they turn a blind eye.....

That is ALWAYS the ONLY concern of "Trust & Safety" at EBAY.

    ALWAYS.

I have noticed the same thing. Guess they haven't worked out all the bugs.

When you see bidder 1 bidder 2 etc it means the auction went to 200.00 or more. Auctions under that threshold you can still see the names.

at least that is how I understood it.

    Good for you.
  • "In 2006, eBay earned $1.13 billion, or 79 cents per share, up 4 percent from $1.08 billion, or 78 cents per share, in 2005. Excluding stock-based compensation costs and other expenses, eBay in 2006 earned $1.49 billion, or $1.05 per share, up nearly 24 percent from $1.2 billion, or 86 cents per share, a year earlier.

Annual revenue was $5.97 billion, up 31 percent from $4.55 billion in 2005. That's higher than the $5.96 billion from the most optimistic analysts polled by Thomson Financial. Overall, analysts expected eBay to earn $1.46 billion, or $1.02 per share, on sales of $5.91 billion.

Despite the rosy quarter, fraud is mounting, and executives say combatting scams has become the top priority for 2007. An internal survey showed scammers may be denting eBay's reputation, and earlier this month, eBay's largest 250 sellers expressed concern during closed-door meetings with executives about the growing number of scams.

Less than one-hundredth of one percent of the listings on eBay are fraudulent. But even by that measure, as many as 61,000 auctions may have been phony last quarter, when more than 610.2 million items were listed.

EBay began a program last year to safeguard members' identities by concealing their user names on expensive listings. That measure could make it harder for con artists to contact losing bidders and goad them into "second chance offers," where customers wire cash to scammers' accounts. "

  • There was a short segment on CNBC that dealt with stolen goods on Ebay. I guess ebay has become the biggest fencing operation in the word. The clip is probably on the CNBC website.

The person in the clip was asked if ebay was asked if he worried that ebay would catch him ( they did not the store he stole from did), he said, No,the more he sold the more they ( ebay) made.

I agree, I hate it and I'm mostly a seller on ebay.

I would rather every bidder being able to see the under bidders id. That way helping to eliminate any questionable bidding practices by some sellers who might shill their auctions.

Now ebay is like a typical auction house where you don't know
    who is the under bidder.

What's next, a buyers premium added to the ending bid that ebay takes a 90% cut of too!

It just stinks in my opinion.

    Regards,

    Rich
  • Rich, your right. I can not understand the main purpose in this. Does it help the seller? Does it help the buyer, the bidder? No it don't. I believe the feedback from ebay users would curb ebay's choice on using this. Maybe we can get it changed. I am concerned about shill bidding. I have seen it done and had it done to me a few times. It is unfair and unjust.

I have noticed it on auctions ending over $200.

Those are EBAY's representations. I have no
confidence in ANY of their statements about
    fraud.

    But...........

If Mastro Auctions made that kind of claim,
ALL of their customers would run for the hills.

If COSTCO or Best Buy said that, their doors
    would close.

For a very long time, I have heard folks say they
would NEVER bid on a "private listing."

Most of those folks seem to still be bidding, under
    EBAY's new privacy scheme.

"The Shill Protection Act of 2007"

Brought to you by EBAY's Trust & Safety Unit.

The folks who claimed on TV last night that if

Safeway and Home Depot did a better job of
protecting their own inventory, less of it would
end up being FENCED by thieves on EBAY.

Is that really the kind ethics that shareholders
    deserve and expect from EBAY?

On the same TV report, the security chief from SafeWay
said that EBAY refused to connect the dots.....

Example: SafeWay had 1000 cases of baby
formula and 1000 cases of Prilosec stolen. When SafeWay
told EBAY that hundreds of listings were hawking the
formula and the Prilosec for pennies on the wholesale
    dollar, EBAY remained unconvinced.

Please google. Listen to reason and help shut this EVIL
    corporation down.

EBAY's MOTO: "People Are Basically Good."

    google's MOTO: "Don't Be Evil."

I know which company I trust.

  • I think this is going to back fire big time. One of the things that differentiated the bay from other auction houses is a potential buyer could see who the bidder was to keep the sellers honest and to discourage shill bidding. Like someone suggested they might as well start charging a Buyer's premium like other auction houses.
