Cracking open a PSA holder

Got a couple grades I'm not happy about and can probably sell better raw.

How do you open a PSA holder without damaging the card?

Here is what I do. Take a flat head screwdriver and a hammer and drive the screwdriver through the plastic at the very edge of the flip (I always do the right side for some reason). Watch your eyes, because a piece or two will go flying. After that, you can take the screwdriver and place it between the top plastic and the flip and slowly pry it apart. I have never damaged one and have busted probably 20 or so that way.

  • So looking at a card, I should crack it in the top right area below the corner?

When I crack, I always saw a little portion off the top corner.
Then as mentioned insert screwdriver and carefully pry.

I cut off the top corner as well (dremel or strong wire cutters seem to work fine), then insert a butter knife or screwdriver and slowly pry the slab apart. Watching your eyes is also great advice - - safety glasses are a must....

So what are you saying here???? The cards came back a PSA 5 (EX) for example and by cracking then out you'll be selling them as exmt or nrmt?

And you guys are obliging him? image
  • I guess we all get grades that we are not happy with...hence the 1001 posts of "crack and resubmit?" questions.

But the grey area is that it will be sold off as raw.

Who are we to judge though?

Everyone is always eager to jump on the bandwagon over what THEY think is questionable.

Case in point...I had a 1985 Donruss Clemens that was flawless. I sent it in...it came back an 8. I cracked and resubmitted...it came back and 8 again.
I cracked it and sold it raw at a show as NM-MT or better (in my eyes it was).

It was sent in by that buyer and came back a PSA 9!!!

So who are we to say??
  • No, 2006 cards that came back a 7. No one will touch them with a ten-foot pole.
